Algebra 1 26, 27 Oct 2011 1) Put papers from your group folder into your binder. 2) Put your binder, hw and text on your desk. CHECK YOUR HOMEWORK CHECK YOUR HOMEWORK √ or X your answers √ or X your answers Warm-up: silently Make four GRAPHS for your four tables from yesterday’s handout. THINK about SCALE. Finish calculating xy and y/x for each. finished? do Improving your visual thinking skills pg. 113

Objective Students will explore direct and inverse variations tabularly and graphically. Students will solve equations using an “undoing” table. Students will take notes, work with their groups to solve problems and present their work to the class.

Homework due today pg. 128 +: 5, 13, 14 Homework due next class NONE- enjoy fall break!!

page 128, #6 Look at each table- how can we decide if it is a direct variation, inverse variation or neither? DIRECT VARIATION  y = kx or k = k = yx INVERSE VARIATION  y = or k = yx #6. Do (a) together- GRAPH the relationship then check k= y/x and k = yx for each

consider graphs look at graphs of direct variation (linear), inverse variation and the graph of “neither” WHAT DO YOU NOTICE?? Can a point with an x-value of zero be on the graph for an inverse variation?

Just un-do it remember: UNDOES addition UNDOES subtraction UNDOES subtraction UNDOES addition UNDOES multiplication UNDOES division UNDOES division UNDOES multiplication work left to right! AND order of operations (work left to right!) Parenthesis (or GROUPINGS) Exponents Multiply OR divide, working left to right Add OR subtract, working left to right

If you were “evaluating”, use PEMA 8 + 2x let x = 4 8 + 2(4) substitute– x is out, 4 is in 8 + 8 multiply 8 + 8 = 16 add When we “solve” equations we UNDO We use PEMA “in reverse” to find X (X STANDS ALONE)– see undoing chart

practice undoing…. complete your handout see page 145 – 146 for examples be ready to share your work with the class

debrief what did you learn today? What was easy? What is still difficult?
