2 Concept Talk How does technology help adventurers reach new places?

3 If something is foreign to you, is it also foreign to the people around you? Why do people go seafaring to foreign lands? Where can we discover treasure other than in a pirate’s trunk?

4 Pinnacle- the highest point of something Finding the Titanic was the pinnacle of his career. Submersible- a small boat or craft used for exploring underwater They used a submersible to find the wreckage on the bottom. Teach your partner these words

5 An acronym is a word formed from the initial letters in a phrase Acronyms should be capitalized Can be found in the dictionary to help understand what it means NASA= National Aeronautics and Space Administration SCUBA= self-contained underwater breathing apparatus

7 Jargon is a special language that belongs exclusively to a particular group, such as sailors or explorers (even teachers). In our story we will see jargon that is about the ocean Jargon: pier, ice field, starboard If I don’t know what these words mean, I need to look them up in the glossary or a dictionary

8 Text Features On page 206 and 207 I see a timeline The dates and the times on the timeline help me see how quickly the Titanic sank. The captions under the photos help explain what is happening in each photo These features help me understand what happened to the Titanic so the author can use the text to explain their exploration of the wreck

9 With technology and what the witnesses of the sinking of the Titanic they have been able to recreate how the Titanic sank. The sinking of the Titanic

10 Cramped-not having much space The space in the sub felt cramped. Debris-broken pieces The ground was covered with scattered debris from the accident. Teach your partner these words.

11 Interior- inside The interior of the ship was covered in mud. Ooze- slimy mud The parts sank in the slimy mud on the bottom of the ocean. Teach your partner these words.

12 Robotic-computer controlled He moved the robotic arm to pick up the rock. Sediment- solid matter that settles at the bottom of a liquid The sediment swirled around in the current. Teach your partner these words.

13 Sonar- equipment that uses sound waves to locate underwater objects The sonar showed there was a ship on the bottom of the ocean. Teach your partner this word
