3 What is auditory study skills? Auditory learning appeals to individuals who are able to encounter and retain information that is delivered in some type of verbal presentation. Rather than making use of reading or other types of visual tools to learn, a person who is primarily auditory in their learning capacity will absorb much more data by encountering the information via a lecture, speech or even an audio recording.

4  Here are the steps in which the sound enters the ear, so that we get to hear.  The sound waves entering the ear, travel first through the ear canal and vibrate the eardrum.  Before the sound waves enter the inner ear, the total pressure must be amplified.  The middle ear do the job of amplification.  Then the inner ear conducts the sound through a fluid.  Cochlea is a complex part of the ear, which takes the physical vibrations caused by the sound waves and translates them into electrical information for the brain to recognize as sound. How do we hear?

5  Auditory learners rely on hearing. They concentrate best by receiving new or difficult information by listening to themselves or someone else talking, and they replay the information in their heads. They remember the key words and phrases. How does auditory learning happen?

6  Learn by listening to others.  Receive instructions aurally from speakers and recordings.  Repeat the information aloud and/or repeat it in their heads.  Talk about/Discuss/Record texts when mastering or reinforcing new or difficult information and ideas.  Question the teacher or presenter and listen to explanations.  Explain their ideas and understandings in person to an assessor.  Listen to feedback about their work. People with strong auditory preferences are more confident and successful when they can:

7  Think aloud:  Before beginning a project or study session, state aloud your goals and the steps that you must go through to achieve them.  When working math problems, talk aloud to yourself and explain the steps you’re doing.

8  Explain what you learned in class to your study partner.  Listen to questions your study partner may have about the material you explained.  Answer your study partner questions.  This way you hear yourself talk about what you’ve learned. Explain the material you are trying to learn to a study partner:

9  State problems out loud.  Reason through solutions out loud. When learning new information:

10  Read facts out loud.  Read your text book out loud.  Read your class or textbook notes out loud Read explanations out loud:

13  Record your class lectures  Listen to your class lectures while you drive or take the bus Record lectures and review:

14  ACRONYMS. You form acronyms by using each first letter from a group of words to form a new word. This is particularly useful when remembering words in a specified order. Acronyms are very common in ordinary language and in many fields.  NBA (National Basketball Associations)  SCUBA (Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus)  BTUs (British Thermal Units)  LASER (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) Use Mnemonic Devices.

15  SENTENCES/ACROSTICS. Acrostics (A-Cross-Tics) like acronyms, you use the first letter of each word you are trying to remember. Instead of making a new word, though, you use the letters to make a sentence. Here are some examples:  My Dear Aunt Sally (mathematical order of operations: Multiply and Divide before you Add and Subtract)  Kings Phil Came Over for the Genes Special (Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Genus, Species)

16 Remember… If you are going to use any of these tips, you will need to say it out loud! Say it to friend, your dog, your loved ones (maybe they will learn something)!!!
