1 PERSUASION Lesson 10: Discussion of African American Literature

2 10.1 REVIEW HOMEWORK  Take out your completed SA 9E.  Homework Discussion  Review Language of Persuasion

3 10.2 LITERATURE WEBS  Turn to SA 10A.  Complete the Literature Web for your novel independently.  Refer to the list of structural elements on SA 4B to help you with your notes on structure; some elements may not apply.

4 10.2 LITERATURE WEBS  You will now be divided into groups of 3-4 students who read the same novel.  Compare and discuss the your webs.  Use chart paper to create a web that includes the ideas of all members.

5 10.3 WHOLE CLASS DISCUSSION  Choose one member to share your group’s Literature Web with the class.  You will now have a few minutes to walk around the room to look at all of the groups’ Literature Webs.  Pay attention to similarities and differences between Group A’s novel and Group B’s novel.

7 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: REASONING QUESTIONS  Not only does each culture have its own customs and traditions, but it also may perceive the world in its own way. How does this statement apply to the book you just read?  Literature from any culture employs strong characters to tell a story. What characters from your reading impressed you? Why? Give specific evidence from the book to support your feelings.

8 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: REASONING QUESTIONS  What inferences can you make about what the characters learned in the story? On what evidence do you base your conclusions?  What predictions might you make about the life of your favorite character after the story ends? What evidence from the book supports your predictions?

9 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: REASONING QUESTIONS  Why does the author use a particular cultural group as a context for the story? What purposes does the author have in doing so?  How do the issues in the book relate to problems in society today? What are the implications of these problems for us or for you?

10 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: CHANGE QUESTION  What elements of change are evident in the book you read? How do they support our generalizations on change?

11 10.4 CULTURE AND CHANGE MATRIX  Take out your written responses to the questions on SA 1B or 1C for your most recent novel.  Return to your group from yesterday and discuss your answers before handing them in.

12 10.4 CULTURE AND CHANGE MATRIX  Turn to SA 7B, which should still be in your book or your binder.  Complete the next two rows of the Cultures and Change Matrix.  Continue to save this page for future work.

13 HOMEWORK  Begin reading Esperanza Rising (Group A) or Taking Sides (Group B).  Begin working on the questions on 1B or 1C for this novel.  This reading and set of questions are due by Lesson 15. Approximately ________________________.
