Hi, my name is Albert. This is my friend Jimmy. We will be your tour guides! Remember to pay attention and copy down all this great information!

Hey Albert, it can be a solid, liquid, gas, or plasma! Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Plasma Did you know of these the least discussed in most textbooks is plasma, even though it is the most abundant of all states. Did you know 99% of all matter in the universe is plasma!

Solids! Solids are tightly packed and have a definite shape and volume. Can you see how close the particles are packed? And how little the particles move?

Liquids! Liquids are tightly packed, but far enough apart to slide over one another. It also has indefinite shape and definite volume.

Gases! Particles in gases are very far apart and move freely Moves randomly Gases have indefinite shape and volume.

Plasma! Plasma is a very good conductor of electricity and is affected by magnetic fields. In plasma the electrons have been stripped away from the nucleus. We call this an ionized gas. This occurs when enough heat is applied. They are heated to over 100,000,000 degrees! Plasma has indefinite shape and volume.

More Plasma! Stars… Neon signs… Lightning… …and fluorescent light bulbs.

Particle arrangement Particle energy Particle to particle distance Adding or removing energy Pressure can affect the arrangement and energy of the particles SolidLiquid GasPlasma

Matter can change between the four states of solid, liquid, gas, and plasma by adding or subtracting energy.

The mass of WATER stays the same at all states of matter. However, it must be in a closed container.

This is called the Kinetic Theory of Matter!

Solids Four States of Matter GasesLiquids Plasma Draw lines to place the items around the edge to their state of matter.

PARTS OF AN ATOM: –Proton – positive charge, found in the nucleus –Electron – negative charge, found in the electron cloud –Neutron – neutral charge, found in the nucleus Atoms are the smallest unit of an element that can exist and still keep the element’s properties. The basic unit of all matter. Hey, that is my last name! Electron Proton Electron Cloud Neutron Nucleus + + - - o o
