1 Chapter 2 STATES OF MATTER
Sec 1 MATTER

2 THE STUDENTS WILL: Recognize that matter is made of particles in constant motion. Relate the 3 states of matter to the arrangement of particles within them.

3 TERMS TO KNOW: MATTER SOLID LIQUID VISCOSITY SURFACE TENSION GAS

4 Anything that occupies space and has mass.
Matter- Anything that occupies space and has mass.

5 KINETIC THEORY OF MATTER????
All matter is composed of small particles (atoms, molecules, or ions). They are in constant, random motion. They constantly collide with each other and with the walls of their container.

6 STATES OF MATTER…. SOLID PLASMA LIQUID GAS

7

8 SOLIDS Particles of solids are tightly packed, vibrating about a fixed position. Heat Solids have a definite shape and a definite volume.

9 CRYSTALLINE SOLIDS Particles arranged in repeating 3 dimensional pattern called a crystal. These solids are called crystalline solids..

10 Amorphous Solids Consist of large particles that are not arranged in repeating a pattern…

11 LIQUIDS Particles of liquids are tightly packed, but are far enough apart to slide over one another. HEAT Liquids have a definite shape, an indefinite volume & take the shape of a container.

12 VISCOSITY Liquid’s resistance to flow Ex. Honey

13 SURFACE TENSION Uneven forces on the particles on the surface of a liquid…. Ex. Water drops.

14 GAS Particles of gases are very far apart and move freely. HEAT
Gases have an indefinite shape and an indefinite volume.

15 PLASMA A plasma is an ionized gas.
A plasma is a very good conductor of electricity and is affected by magnetic fields. Plasmas, like gases have an indefinite shape and an indefinite volume

16 Some places where plasmas are found…
1. Flames

17 2. Lightning

18 3. Aurora (Northern Lights)

19 The Sun is an example of a star in its plasma state

20

21 STATES OF MATTER SOLID LIQUID GAS PLASMA
Close together with no regular arrangement. Vibrate, move about, and slide past each other Tightly packed, in a regular pattern Vibrate, but do not move from place to place Well separated with no regular arrangement. Vibrate and move freely at high speeds Has no definite volume or shape and is composed of electrical charged particles
