6. What is the Demographic Transition Model (DTM)? The demographic transition model explains the transformation of countries from having high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates. In developed countries this transition began in the 18th century and continues today. Less developed countries began the transition later and many are still in earlier stages of the model.

18. Population change in MEDCs Birth rates in MEDCs are falling as women choose to have smaller families later in life. Contraception is easily available and well understood. This helps women to plan their families and to have a career too

Explain why this pattern (natural increase) may occur (4) Must be linked to natural increase- so include both birth and death rates Areas such as Africa tend to have a high natural increase because there death rates are falling (due to medical advancements and improving access to essential services such as water) but their birth rate remains relatively high due to lack of contraception/ low status of women etc. This leads to an natural increase. In MEDCs the birth rate has fallen (due to high cost of living and later marriage etc.) which means that the birth rate and death rate are roughly equal meaning no or less increase in the total population.
