What major changes have there been in transportation? How has that changed the situation of cities?

3 Pre-European Exploration Cities Before the era of exploration, what was it about the location of a city that would make it successful? Think about making money and the map to the right.

5 The old walled city of Khiva, in western Uzbekistan, was once the capital of the kingdom of Khorezm, near the Aral Sea. It grew rich on the Silk Road trade carried across Central Asia's deserts. (Very beneficial situation)

6 Era of European Exploration What becomes the dominant mode of transportation of high value goods? (1500s- 1800s) What kind of urban situation (location) now has the greatest advantage? On the next map, notice where the important cities are now located.
