1 Review Literary Terms Rhetorical device: technique used by authors to communicate ideas effectively Tone: the authors attitude toward the subject Theme: central idea or message of piece Repetition: technique of repeating words or phrases to reinforce meaning and create rhythm. Parallelism: the use of similar grammatical structures to express ideas that are related or equal in importance. Syntax: arrangement of words into phrases, clauses and sentences (sentence structure)
