doc.: IEEE 802.11-09/0716r0 Submission July 2009 Kapil SoodSlide 2 Abstract This presentation has 2 objectives: Deliver a brief overview of the Smart Grid activities Explore interest in 802.11 intersect with Smart Grid usages

doc.: IEEE 802.11-09/0716r0 Submission July 2009 Kapil SoodSlide 3 What is Smart Grid? Electric Power Research Institute’s (EPRI) definition: Smart Grid is one that incorporates information and communications technology into every aspect of electricity generation, delivery and consumption in order to: –minimize environmental impact, –enhance markets, –improve reliability and service, –reduce costs and improve efficiency

doc.: IEEE 802.11-09/0716r0 Submission July 2009 Kapil SoodSlide 4 Smart Grid – Build-out of Integrated Communication and Power Infrastructures Power Sources and Generation Managing Load Measurement and Control Security and Privacy Energy Management Consumer Interface Metering Infrastructure Data Networks Others… This is a BIG project!!!

doc.: IEEE 802.11-09/0716r0 Submission July 2009 Kapil SoodSlide 5 Smart Grid Development US Government Leadership –Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007 –American Recovery and Re-Investment Act ($11.2B incentive) NIST Smart Grid Initiative –George W Arnold, National Coordinator for Smart Grid Interoperability, NIST –In co-operation with other Organizations, NIST has “primary responsibility to coordinate development of a framework that includes protocols and model standards for information management to achieve interoperability of smart grid devices and systems…” EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute) Role –Chartered with research and leadership in development of Smart Grid roadmap –Organizing workshops and meetings IEEE SCC21 P2030 –Develop a Guide for Smart Grid Interoperability of Energy Technology and Information Technology Operation With the Electric Power System (EPS), and End-Use Applications and Loads Chair: Dick DeBlasio; Vice-Chair: Tom Prevost Co-Chairs: Bob Grow, Sam Sciacca, Stefano Galli, Bob Heile; Secretary: Tom Basso

doc.: IEEE 802.11-09/0716r0 Submission July 2009 Kapil SoodSlide 6 Smart Grid Applicability to 802.11 Numerous Smart Grid usages apply to 802.11 –Within Home and Enterprise –Metro and Residential backhaul –Power Control and Distribution Centers –Integration into the “Smart Meter” –Others… Smart Grid is a new and potentially huge market for 802.11 –WFA Alliance notified NIST to include 802.11 (June ’09) Why 802.11 for Smart Grid –Ubiquity and broad success make 802.11 a logical choice Embraced by Users and Enterprises Worldwide –‘Play’ with 100s million devices out there –A rich set of tools and techniques –WiFi Alliance for Interoperability and Certification Broad presence of other technologies: ZigBee, HomePlug, 802.15.4g

doc.: IEEE 802.11-09/0716r0 Submission July 2009 Kapil SoodSlide 7 802.11 Membership Involvement If so… –Identify our role and contribution to the Smart Grid –Engage in Smart Grid development process (NIST, EPRI, others) NIST Meeting Aug 3-4, 09 in DC area Introduce WiFi Requirements in NIST (e.g. AMI, Security, etc.) –Identify any gaps that exist for 802.11 for Smart Grid usages Derive requirements If not… –??? Open Discussion
