Kapune Nampam: Swachh Gram LABLE-IV Gram Panchayat, Upper Subansiri District, Arunachal Pradesh Tapak Dagam, ASM Dagam village

Mera Desh, Mera gaon Thanks for the train!! It took me 5 days to reach from my village to Bhopal, without train it would have been 7 days

View of Dagam Village

Village in Upper Subansiri District of Arunachal Pradesh Village population: 211 people. Very sparse No road connectivity till date One needs to walk for 2-4 hours in tough and steep mountains. Life is difficult DAGAM VILLAGE, AN INTRODUCTION The hanging bridge to Dagam village We have to carry everything on head

The Situation Before Very unhygienic sanitation practices No separate space for pigs, hens, dogs. It was like all living together. Open defecation. People used to relieve themselves from top of the bamboo house Pigs and dogs would consume it, come in contact with children and food Used bamboo sticks to clean after relieving instead of water Water-borne diseases, Skin infections common Humans and poultry here Pigs used to be sheltered here

CHALLENGES 1. Major challenge: to change the mindset of the people. “Since ages we are giving our toilet to pigs and dogs”. 2. Lack of proper water supply 3. Fund constraint: A cement bag which is 400 Rs in Guwahati would cost 1200 Rs. in my village “ We are our minds, what we think, we become. ” Buddha The only bridge to village

How did we do it Had many meetings and discussions in the village. Persuaded people Formed Village Water Sanitation Committee Linked sanitation with religious sentiment of the people Created Bye Laws in Gram Sabha. Fine for unclean activities. Series of awareness and sensitization programs with support from various government officials and experts “earlier we use to have meat of Mithun and Pig which were scarified in name of god. But after adopting Christianity, we have stopped sacrificing animal for religious purpose, now we kill animals only for consumption. So if we can agree to change age old practice. then there shouldn’t be any reservation for changing the age old practice of open defecation.” (Tapak Dagam)

The Bye-laws by the Village Water and Sanitation Committee 1.Those villagers who do not clean their houses and surroundings will be fined Rs 100 2.Those who do not cut nails 4 times per month will be fined Rs 50 3.Those who do not take bath at least two times per week will be fined Rs 50 4.Those who do not defecate in toilet will be fined Rs 100

2009: Rs.12 lakh under National Rural Drinking Water Supply program, constructed filtration, reservoir tanks and six water pipe platform in the village.
