Safe Road Infrastructure George Mavroyeni – Executive Director, Major Projects (former Executive Director, Road Safety and Network Access) May 2011

Blackspots  What is a blackspot? A blackspot is a site where there has been a high number of crashes involving injury or death.  Federal blackspot program: $13.6 million per annum  State blackspot program: $4 million per annum (up to 2011)  Safer Roads Infrastructure Program Approximately $80 million per annum

Blacklengths  Highest risk lengths of roads on the network

Greyspot Program  A greyspot is a high risk intersection that does not meet traditional crash-based blackspot criteria.  A $31 million Greyspot Program is being funded as part of the Safer Road Infrastructure Program.  The Greyspot Program is designed to improve road safety at locations where a safety risk has been identified.

Route based treatments  A whole-of-route approach to road safety which involves developing a set of infrastructure improvements to achieve the ‘Safe System’ along a route.  The key objective is to reduce road and roadside hazards along the route and at the same time, achieve consistent road conditions that road users expect. 30 km

Route based treatments  New or improved line marking such as edge lines, centre lines, tactile lines  Delineation using guide posts and curve alignment markers  Intersection definitions for side roads such as sealing bell mouths, intersection control signage, visibility and sight distance  Shoulder sealing  Safety barriers for roadside hazards such as trees and poles that are close to road edges.

Typical treatments  Wire rope safety barriers

Typical treatments  Curve alignment markers

Typical treatments  Installation of traffic signals

Typical treatments  Tactile edge lines and centre lines Tactile edge lineTactile centre line

Typical treatments  Shoulder sealing, installation of guard fence Before After

Typical treatments  Roundabout

Typical treatments  Electronic speed sign

Typical treatments  Vehicle activated warning sign

Typical treatments  Delineation; raised pavement markers

Typical treatments  School speed zones – Advanced warning signs – School speed zone signs – Variable speed signs

Typical treatments  40km/h strip shopping centres
