2013 EMTA Barometer Antonio García Pastor 2013 EMTA barometer Feelings, doubts, wise decisions, future corrections, printed / online, yearly / twice yearly, less data, more cities, homogeneity, main city / PTA area, comparable database, availability, benchmarking tool, sustainability, understanding, …….

2013 EMTA Barometer Antonio García Pastor CONTENTS Results of the query on use of barometer Barometer 2013 main issues and data Main problems in the 2013 database Conclusions

3 2013 EMTA Barometer Antonio García Pastor Question 1: Is the Barometer a useful tool for you to gain insight in your peer ranking of KPI’s ? -Not sure if the database is comparable. -Certain PTA have not been studying it sufficiently so far. -Difficult to make comparisons between cities. NO 23% YES 77% -It is the only tool available. -Permit to know where you stand among other EMTA members. -Useful for presentations.

4 2013 EMTA Barometer Antonio García Pastor Question 2: Do you use the Barometer to benchmark your performance? And if so, what aspects of the Barometer are your superiors (or leadership) particularly interested in? Yes, in particular attention was drawn to: * Data on supply and demand Mobility indicators Financial performance (turnover, cost coverage) and fare levels Other, namely: No, not so far. YES 69% NO 31% 46% 31% 46% 15%

5 2013 EMTA Barometer Antonio García Pastor Question 3: How would you frame the importance of Barometer data as a benchmarking tool? Nice to have Useful to have Need to have

6 2013 EMTA Barometer Antonio García Pastor Question 4: Does the Barometer satisfy your needs? Yes Only partially, I want more or different data on…. No, I would rather have another data toolkit, like…

7 2013 EMTA Barometer Antonio García Pastor If not, what indicators do you miss? “Customer satisfaction”. “Average age of rolling stock, P&R, bike parking places, tickets sales”. “Sustainability, social security and PTA backgrounds (number of contracts and operators, method of contracting,…)”. “We lack certain values linked to our figures”. “Would be useful to have per capita public transport use in the main city as well as for the PTA area (as with the mode share) as some PTA areas cover much rural area whilst others are very much urban. eg the city of Stuttgart has much higher public transport use than the whole PTA area”. “Would be useful to have a table with average distance between stops for: bus, tram, metro and commuter train”. “Clarification on what is collected to ensure comparable data as much as possible; example to state if commercial speed is for weekday daytime off peak or am peak? That modal share is for all journeys in the PTA area, and the whole of the main city not just the central business district of the main city (statistics for the central business district of a city in these types of things can be misleading. If commercial speed is for weekday daytime off peak or a.m. Peak”.

12 2013 EMTA Barometer Antonio García Pastor Main Problems in the 2013 database Density and surface: 32% PTAs do not have data. PTA coverage Annual GDP/inhabitant in main city: 24% PTAs do not have data. Mean number of trips per person per day: 36% PTAs do not have data. Network length per mode: great differences between data. Number of contracted operator per mode: very few data. Places and seats-km per mode: very few data and inconsistency. Commercial speed per mode: 28% PTAs do not have data. Fleet, bus lanes and P&R data: very few PTAs have data on this. Financial: inconsistency and very few data

13 2013 EMTA Barometer Antonio García Pastor Conclusions It is necessary to separate data collection and treatment from presentation We still have to work more to obtain homogenous data. Problems in deadlines for sending data and understanding of the information Several corrections after first sending. This points a more “cooperative” review Select the most important and useful indicators. Hardcopies can be suppressed and we can go for a more “web” type presentation style but the main work is in data preparation, correction and crosschecking Thanks very much !!!
