SPUTNIC – Strategies for Public Transport in Cities http://www.sputnicproject.eu/ Strategies for Public Transport in Cities Funded by the EU Current situation – State-of-the-Art (1) outdated rolling stock inhomogeneous vehicle fleets (little standardization) maintenance costly rolling stock and infrastructure less productive company departments Over-staffed companies

SPUTNIC – Strategies for Public Transport in Cities http://www.sputnicproject.eu/ Strategies for Public Transport in Cities Funded by the EU Current situation – State-of-the-Art (2) almost no existing traffic management systems almost no operational control systems no electronic passenger information systems deficiencies in connection between local traffic and inter urban traffic

SPUTNIC – Strategies for Public Transport in Cities http://www.sputnicproject.eu/ Strategies for Public Transport in Cities Funded by the EU Market Organisation - challenges (1) Decreasing public resources for public transport and lack of funds to finance investments and operation. Low integration of PT in overall mobility and transport planning. Low integration between local and regional (and national) transport networks and services. Missing integrated tariff and fare systems

SPUTNIC – Strategies for Public Transport in Cities http://www.sputnicproject.eu/ Strategies for Public Transport in Cities Funded by the EU Market Organisation Cluster (2) Low implementation of division between buyer/authority and operator. Low co-operation between PT companies. Few incentives for PT operators to cut costs and increase revenues. Low implementation of quality and performance monitoring. Low contribution of fare revenues to cost coverage

SPUTNIC – Strategies for Public Transport in Cities http://www.sputnicproject.eu/ Strategies for Public Transport in Cities Funded by the EU Equipment and Operational Aspects (2) Rolling Stock issues Improvement of technical safety and reliability Harmonisation of inhomogeneous bus and tram fleets Introduction (upgrading or buying new fleet) of low floor vehicles or compartments Use of alternative fuel for buses – energy savings, increase of reliability, less pollution lack of funding public transport

SPUTNIC – Strategies for Public Transport in Cities http://www.sputnicproject.eu/ Strategies for Public Transport in Cities Funded by the EU Equipment and Operational Aspects (3) Enhancing safety and improving operating quality for passengers improvement of interoperability between metro – tram – light rail - bus Vehicle maintenance Question: To buy new rolling stock or to refurbish or upgrade existing or second hand vehicles? No universal solution for every city-detailed economical analysis considering local conditions needed
