Using the remote access option on the lab computers Fall 2005

We are running a trial program where students are allowed access to the computers in SI-075 when the lab is closed This will allow you to use Matlab, and any other program installed in the CS/Engineering computing lab from home Because this is a trial program please do not count on the system working – you are still responsible for assignment due dates!! Let us know how the system works for you and any problems you might have

A set of directions is available on the Cs Lab homepage www.cs.slcc.edu/si075/ www.cs.slcc.edu/si075/

Read the directions, then follow the link to the RealVNC homepage to download the software you will need

The software is available for free at www.realvnc.com

The free version is all you need

Follow the links to the download page – all you need is the viewer

The program downloads much like any other software

When you run the program you’ll see the following dialog box

You need to enter the server name at SLCC – which is the computer you will attach too mutiny.cs.slcc.edu:xxxx The xxxx value identifies the individual computer in the lab Currently there are 6 computers available for remote access –5912 –5913 –5914 –5915 –5916 –5917 Try them all if you have trouble logging in This list is updated regularly, so check the lab homepage for the most recent list of available workstations.

Remote connection is only available when the lab is closed If you try to access the lab when it is open, you’ll get an error message --- Connection refused

You may be prompted to specify a color level The default is low, which is fine for Matlab The connection will be slower if you specify more colors

Passwords You will be prompted for a password by the connection program –Your instructor will provide the password in class –Send your instructor an email if you don’t remember or can’t find it. At this point you should see the computer desktop as it appears in the Engineering computing lab You will still need to log onto the computer, using your class user name and password However…..

Ctrl-Alt-Delete In our lab the first step to log in is to issue the Ctrl-Alt-Delete command If you do this from a remote computer, it will act on the local computer – the one you are typing on!! Instead, click on the VNC title bar and select the –Send Cntrl-Alt-Delete option

Remember, that you are now using the computer in the lab – not the one on your desk If you save something to the C drive – it is the C drive on the remote computer You will need to save your work to the hard drive temp file, then email it to yourself You can also access WebCT remotely, tho the response may not be adequate Don’t forget that when you log off the temp drive is erased!!

Please let me know if you have any problems, or if any of these instructions are unclear
