Día de Independencia de México El 16 de septiembre Por la Srta. Galler

Hechos The celebration begins every September 15 at 11pm in every city in Mexico. There is lots of food like elote and chalupas. There is also a lot of drinks, music performed by mariachis, and dancing. Cities are decorated with flowers and people have huge parties.

Hechos There are also rodeos, parades, bullfights, and horseback riding performances. At the end celebration, the president rings the liberty bell and the people always do “El Grito de Independencia.” In Mexico City (the capital), the president does “El Grito de Independencia” but in the other cities the Mexican Consul does it.

El Grito de Independencia The people shout the same words as General Hidalgo did in 1821 when the war was over. ¡Viva México! ¡Viva la Virgen Guadeloupe!

Historia It all started on September 16, 1810 with the Mexican War of Independence. General Miguel Hidalgo led Mexico into battle to fight Spain and the Spanish rule for Mexico’s independence. The war lasted until 1821 and General Hidalgo was executed by a firing squad.

Historia After a few years of fighting without much success, the Mexicans united their two political parties (the liberals and the conservatives) to form an alliance and fighting together, they finally won the war against King Ferdinand and Spain.
