Map Rules

Before you turn in your map can you check off these boxes Labeling ______ I labeled everything on the list provided with the map ______ I used black pen ______ I printed small and neat ______ I labeled in the proper direction * Labeling horizontally unless I was labeling along the mountains and rivers * Consulting the atlas if I was unsure about the direction in which to label Coloring ______ I colored all the land that was not shaded ______ I used colored pencils ______ I used the correct color scheme * Using a map with an elevation key for a Physical Map * Coloring by country or region for a Political Map ______ I colored neatly staying in the lines and coloring in one direction Remember Planning makes Perfect

Labeling ______ I labeled everything on the list provided with the map ______ I used black pen ______ I printed small and neat ______ I labeled in the proper direction

Labeling ______ I labeled everything on the list provided with the map ______ I used black pen ______ I printed small and neat ______ I labeled in the proper direction Pencil is too light It is alright to label everything black, but is not alright to label everything blue. Blue means that it is water. It can only be used when labeling water.

Labeling ______ I labeled everything on the list provided with the map ______ I used black pen ______ I printed small and neat ______ I labeled in the proper direction Do not draw a lot of crossing lines. If an item doesn’t fit draw a short strait line

Labeling ______ I labeled everything on the list provided with the map ______ I used black pen ______ I printed small and neat ______ I labeled in the proper direction * Labeling horizontally unless I was labeling along the mountains and rivers * Consulting the atlas if I was unsure about the direction in which to label Should not need to rotate map to read it. Mountains should be labeled along the range’s length

Coloring ______ I colored all the land that was not shaded ______ I used colored pencils ______ I used the correct color scheme * Using a map with an elevation key for a Physical Map * Coloring by country or region for a Political Map ______ I colored neatly staying in the lines and coloring in one direction You do not need to color land or water that is shaded

Coloring ______ I colored all the land that was not shaded ______ I used colored pencils ______ I used the correct color scheme * Using a map with an elevation key for a Physical Map * Coloring by country or region for a Political Map ______ I colored neatly staying in the lines and coloring in one direction

Coloring ______ I colored all the land that was not shaded ______ I used colored pencils ______ I used the correct color scheme * Using a map with an elevation key for a Physical Map * Coloring by country or region for a Political Map ______ I colored neatly staying in the lines and coloring in one direction Simply coloring a physical map green and scribbling brown in places does not make it a Physical Map. A Physical map should be colored by elevation, not by political units (countries or regions)

Coloring ______ I colored all the land that was not shaded ______ I used colored pencils ______ I used the correct color scheme * Using a map with an elevation key for a Physical Map * Coloring by country or region for a Political Map ______ I colored neatly staying in the lines and coloring in one direction

Planning makes Perfect

Helpful Hint: Think before you label. Try to identify areas on the map where you will have to label many things. Start with small landforms or ones located in tight or crowded spaces and label them first. Rivers are a good item to start with. They are located near other landforms (like the valley or basin they flow through) and need careful planning.

Helpful Hint: Think before you color. Sometimes political maps have landforms on them that look like a boundary line. Sometimes it is helpful to trace the boundaries of a country before you color it in.
