Cleaner and Greener Hayes A joint project involving Botwell House, Minet Junior and Dr Triplett’s schools, along with the London Borough of Hillingdon and Hayes Town Partnership.

How did it all begin? On 21 st February 2012 staff representatives from Botwell House, Minet Junior and Dr Triplett’s schools, along with staff from the LBH and David Brough, representing HayesTown Partnership, met to discuss the idea of setting up a ‘Cleaner and Greener Hayes Student Council’. It was unanimously agreed that this was a good idea and all interested groups, at the meeting, said they would be involved.

Involving the school children Staff from the schools went away from the first meeting and representatives were chosen from each of the three schools to form a ‘Cleaner and Greener’ student council. This was made up of 4 reps from each school, ranging from Year 4 to Year 6 pupils. Initial ground rules were set for meetings and actions agreed upon, with regard to getting children in the three schools involved.

What did they decide? The first student council meeting was held and some actions decided upon. Each school: to identify an area and complete a ‘litter’ check to promote a litter poster competition, with the emphasis being on getting the family involved to take part in ‘Litter Picks’, organised by LBH to prepare a presentation about what’s good and what’s not so good about our Hayes streets and parks, etc.

Off to a great start! Exciting presentations, by all three schools, were very positively received by LBH representatives, including the Mayor A joint litter pick was carried out in and around Hayes town The poster competition was a huge success with prizes donated by the Hayes Town Partnership group Meetings were held at all three schools as well as one at the Botwell Green Library

Work as a team, make Hayes clean!

Education outside the classroom overflows into the classroom

What does this mean? Cross Curricular links. An English lesson has a PSHCE theme – Poetry/Our Environment Throw litter in the bin This town will surely win Make Hayes Cleaner Make Hayes Greener Don’t sin, put litter in the rubbish bin You are a quitter If you are a spitter

Rhymes, slogans, getting the message across 2, 4, 6, What do we appreciate? A Cleaner, Greener Hayes! Dog fouling is no good Bad for our neighbourhood! Put litter in the bin Make sure it stays in! Graffiti can be quite an art But some is tearing our town apart

Keep Hayes Clean Keep Hayes a clean place to live in By putting rubbish in the bin, bin, bin Keep our town clean and green So it’s a place we’re proud to be seen Let’s join together to make a green Hayes Listen to people say, ‘Oh my days!’ 2, 4, 6, 8, let’s make Hayes great 2, 3, 4, 5, let’s make Hayes come alive

Cleaner Greener Hayes Student Council have a clear vision What they want to see A safer place with people trusting and helping each other. A cleaner environment with no graffiti and no spitting. A place where people join in and care about places and notice nature. Nicer views from our homes, with less litter.

To achieve the vision they will: Provide opportunities to educate people, to take care of the environment and to show people the positives of Hayes. When people see us, out and about, promoting our vision, hopefully, they will follow. We will let people know about the hidden jewels of Hayes. Not those sort of jewels silly!

What are we working on at present? We are: Soon to distribute a glossy colourful leaflet, explaining what we are all about, to the locals (we have copies available for you to take away) Carrying out site visits to Minet and Barra Hall parks to complete a survey with regard to what is good and what needs improving Making some recommendations about other parks in the area Preparing another community competition, involving Hayes town businesses

Cleaner and Greener Symbol The idea of a symbol was discussed and a butterfly was decided upon. Brunel University design and technology students made each school a metal butterfly. Council members thought the butterfly symbolised the result of change – the transformation the group is trying to achieve, where tidier areas are evident, and pleasant views observed.

Has the CGH student Council made a difference? WE BELIEVE SO! Borough personnel have always been supportive and encouraging The three schools have worked collaboratively together very positively All children in our schools are more aware of how to look after our town Hayes businesses are very aware and supportive of what we are doing

Thank you! The Cleaner and Greener Hayes Student Council thank the following:  Julia Heggie (LBH) – she is the driver  David Brough (Hayes Town Partnership) – he is a loyal and hands-on supporter  Botwell, Minet and Dr Triplett’s schools  Local Hayes town businesses  LBH personnel – they listen with a keen ear, and act upon most of our ideas 
