Theo van Veen, Koninklijke Bibliotheek Metadata in the context of The European Library

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 2 Introduction and background Aspects of the work The metadata Overview of architecture Approach and state of the art review Analysis of functionality of metadata TEL metadata registry Collections Conclusions Overview

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 3 An “accompanying measure” created under auspices of CENL Collaboration of national libraries of Finland, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Switzerland, United Kingdom and ICCU and CENL Part funded by the European Commission for 30 months to test feasibility If successful it is anticipated that other CENL members will participate Introduction

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 4 Rich and varied collections and trusted sources of reliable and high quality information Unique to each country - enhanced by being united to display the cultural diversity of Europe TEL aims to offer a single portal for search and access The Vision “.. discovery of and access to the collections, products and services of European National Libraries....aimed at users world-wide who want a powerful and easy way of finding European cultural resources....will display the richness and diversity of European culture through co-operation in innovation”

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 5 User perspective –integrated access with central index –multi-lingual subject terms and name authorities –links to local services Provider perspective –lower barrier to participate –simple protocols –facilitate conversions and addition of collections Library perspective –common vocabulary with ongoing development –machine readable metadata sharing What TEL is aiming at

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 6 1Publisher relations 2Business models 3Metadata 4Interoperability testbeds 5Dissemination and use 6Management The work packages

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 7 The metadata jungle Functionality and services will be our target in the complex metadata world!

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 8 Potential TEL services Interlinking national resources Registry of all European heritage collections Memory of Europe Virtual collections (European wide) Automatic translation of metadata, abstracts and publications Timelines and geographical traveling though heritage collections Create TEL metadata infrastructure that makes it easy to add new services !

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 9 TEL overview Object and collection descriptions Collections and objects TEL portal Z39.50 additiona l services Link service s OpenURL OAI SRU Central index DESCRIBING

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 10 Highlights Combination of distributed searching via Z39.50 and central indexing using: –The Open Archives Initiative protocol for metadata harvesting (OAI-PMH) –Search and Retrieve via URLs (SRU) Integration with collection level descriptions Metadata registry for controlled evolution of TEL application profile User and context specific link services (OpenURL,URN) Extra services: multilingual subject service (MACS project), name authorities service (LEAF project) and authentication

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 11 Search and Retrieve via URLs (SRU) Initiative from Z39.50 implementers group Low barrier implementation of server and client Search via simple standard URL syntax Human readable query language (CQL) XML response conform standard schema in standard XML envelope TEL test interface for SRU written as XSL stylesheet with some additional javascript giving it very powerful portal functionality

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 12 The metadata approach State of art review Use XML and DC-Library Application Profile as starting point for TEL metadata Study of functionality: map metadata and functions Create TEL application profiles for objects and for collection descriptions Create TEL Metadata Registry for profile maintenance and portal functions Create a TEL metadata handbook with guidelines

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 13 TEL realisation State of art review Analysis of functionalityRealisation of testbeds TEL application profiles TEL metadata registryTEL integrated testbed WOW!

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 14 State of the art review No consensus on terminology Absence of a common bibliographic format Need to share knowledge on metadata standards Not yet one standard linking mechanism (URL, URN, PURL, dynamic links) Uncertainty on the contents of TEL

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 15 Mapping metadata against functions List all metadata elements in DC-Lib List (all) possible functions Check for each combination whether metadata are usable, needed or not relevant Identify metadata elements that are missing or need special attention DC-Lib elements functions

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 16 Functions and services search record retrieval identification description linking multilingual service thesaurus service collection level navigation authorisation administration software requirements copy cataloguing document ordering Identification of original record (harvesting, linking by reference) Metadata for linking by URN and OpenURL Collection description elements in general Base-url for dynamic generation of URLs for direct searching in collections. Create TEL application profile(s) containing TEL specific metadata elements, but ….

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 17 TEL application profile Specification of elements, definitions, rules, and namespaces Specifications of characteristics like: –Type of obligation –Vocabularies Elements taken from different namespaces: –DCES (Original 15 elements) –Dcterms (approved qualifiers) –DC-LMES (DC Library AP elements) –DC-ED (DC Educational AP elements) –MODS (LC MODS) –Collection Level Description elements –TEL (TEL specific elements) But.... to enable new functionality and to retain diversity and richness....... we need a mechanism for a controlled evolution of the application profile: the TEL Metadata Registry!

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 18 Purpose of registry Create TEL application profiles –for object descriptions –for collection descriptions –for thesaurus records Specify behaviour of TEL portal –portal functions and presentation –dynamic link generation –usage of services –search options For data providers: –Expose TEL metadata requirements (e.g. conversions) –Offer a menu of existing metadata elements for the proposal of new elements –Creation of input forms

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 19 TEL Definitions The TEL Application Profile contains characteristics on terms agreed by TEL for a specific types of descriptions to: –specify requirements to data providers –exchange information on these terms with the outside world to improve convergence The TEL Metadata Registry is a single place to store data concerning metadata relevant to TEL (including proposed and rejected terms) combined with relevant tools. It is used for : –building application profiles –specify the portal behaviour –maintenance (controlled evolution)

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 20 Shared re-use of registry XMLXSL output XSL trans- formation TEL metadata registry Select entries approved for collection descriptions TEL collection description profile Input form / select collection description entries Collection description editor Specification of portal presentation TEL portal presentation

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 21 Collection description form (D3.3) Select new field Elements from TEL application profile for collection level descriptions (based on RSLP) new data field Extract namespace prefixes from registry, perform checks, apply rules and generate collection level description in XML according to DCMI guidelines.

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 22 Usage of the registry/profile registry TEL portal Acceptanc e procedure collection element properties collection provider Add element Specify behavior Meta- data Application profile Generate profile(s) Specify conversions Check elements Apply rules... the TEL metadata registry will be open for submission only for TEL participants! The TEL metadata registry should improve harmonisation of metadata usage, but...

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 23 Enter new collection OAI CLDs TEL portal Central index Acceptanc e procedure Collection description Meta- data New collection

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 24 collection object Distributed search Result list Object is target for new search New result list Collection hierarchy Confusing? But suppose your query matches collections. Do you want to miss those collections in your result list?

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 25 Metadata and TEL services Multi- lingual subject service Remote target TEL portal Central index Local ink service Name authority service Local service Metadata OpenURL Local service Service request query Translated subject Improved query proposal Name authorities query Links to local services Remote target metadata query Improved query proposal

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 26

META-LIB workshop Frankfurt 21-22 October 2002 27 Conclusions Although the current TEL project will not result in a fully operational European Library system, the results of the project will constitute the groundwork on which TEL’s ambitious vision can be realised. TEL is is following the newest open standards like Dublin Core in XML, Application Profiles, OAI, SRU and OpenURL. “TEL is undertaking pioneering work and should do research, make mistakes, redo and evolve !!!” More info: http://www.europeanlibrary.org
