3 Vocabulary Category: How strong the storm is Bigger number = stronger winds Hurricanes are always more powerful over water. Weaken as soon as they get over land

4 Vocabulary The hurricane can push the tide much higher than normal. This is called storm surge. Causes serious flooding

5 Other Things to Know Special planes fly into hurricanes to get detailed information about wind speed and air pressure.

6 Other Things to Know Hurricanes can be many miles wide. The center of the storm is called the eye. The eye is often clear or nearly clear. The position of the hurricane is measured from the eye.

7 Other Things to Know Hurricane names are retired for big storms If the storm wasn’t big, the name gets re-used

8 Our Project We will be researching a famous hurricane. You’ll draw your hurricane name. There is a template for your project on the class website.
