3. What is it? A test Gauges your reading, discussion and writing skills Divided into 3 parts 1. Reading, understanding and annotating various texts 2. Discussing texts in a small or large group 3. Writing about texts –connecting them in some way

4. Why? Part of new Common Core Standards which most states are adopting Point of new standards is to help students become more college ready Will be tested by state in this manner in 2 years (replacing CST) *Will help you become a more critical thinker and problem solver *All classes have their own form of performance task

Grading You will be given a score, but that score will not affect your grade You will however get completion points (so you must do all parts) *The score is to show you how prepared you are for this type of assessment *Also helps me understand where each of you are as a student *You will have three more performance tasks this year (all similar to format of this one so use it as learning experience)

8. Why Annotate? Makes you a better and active reader—forces you to think while reading Helps you understand or ask questions about the text Helps you remember text better *You will be asked to annotate every text we read

9. How to Annotate *Look at handout

10. Annotation Review 1.Look at the writing prompt. What should you annotate for? 2.Read/view the source, paying special attention when ideas come up that relate to the writing prompt. 3.Highlight or underline anything that is relevant to the topic or strikes you as especially important. In the margin, write why you highlighted/underlined it. This is the most critical step!

11. Annotation Practice 1.Read passage “C” (we will read as a class out loud) 2.Focus on the idea of art and literature versus math and science. Think about… Does the author believe that art/literature or math/science is more important for education? Does the author take a side? What evidence does he/she present? 3. Highlight or underline anything that is relevant to this topic 4. Be prepared to discuss why you underlined or highlighted something

12. After Reading 1. Go back to parts you highlighted/underlined and in margin explain why you thought is was important enough to mark (how does it relate to art vs. science) 2. Write a one sentence statement above the source using this frame: In (title of source) the author shows that (arts/literature or math/science) should play a significant role in education because (one reason the author provides).

13. In “Why Literature Matters,” the author shows that literature should play a significant role in education because reading helps foster creativity which is an important skill for economic growth.

18. Day 2: Annotation 1.Fill out top of packet 2.Bubble in and write your permanent ID # (look on you ID Card or Locator) 3.Do not lose because you will have to turn in on Thursday 9/12 Remember we are only completing Task 1 right now!

20. Day 2: Annotation 1.Annotate all items in packet (includes article, poem, cartoon, artwork, video) 2. Focus on the idea from the prompt (how does it relate to art vs. science). 3. Highlight or underline what is relevant to this idea *remember to not mark everything

26. Why Discuss? It is important for you to think for yourself rather than me to tell you all the correct answers Addressing questions in a group helps you think critically and express ideas with clarity (its important people understand what you are trying to say) This is not a discussion about your opinions or feelings on the readings It is discussion about the ideas in the texts

27. Rules of Discussion Participate (speak and listen to others) Be prepared to answer all questions Refrain from interrupting others Support your ideas by pointing out things you highlighted in the texts Make sure this is a friendly discussion

28. How you will be graded Rubric: score 1-5 Look at handout I will walk around and listen to your discussion. I will also collect your handout, so take notes!

29. Step 3: Writing Prompt: Using at least 3 sources (2 from packet, one of your choice). The essay should be a balance of paraphrasing and quoting from the text as well as your opinions/conclusions.

30. Step 3: Writing You will write your essay in class on Tuesday. Guidelines for Writing: – The prompt… You will be writing an argumentative essay in which you will support your opinion with information from the sources you have annotated. – Format Your essay should have a beginning, middle, and end. The number and organization of the paragraphs is up to you (it should be logically organized) You will be writing in MLA format

Reminders This is to show me if you can write an essay and connect an idea in each of the texts Try to write 3-5 paragraphs – Introduction –providing topic and focus for essay – 1-3 body paragraphs -talking about the texts. Remember you are connecting them all to the power of words – Conclusion –wrapping up your ideas

33. Try to use quotes or ideas directly from the readings in the body paragraphs. Make sure your clearly identify which texts you are using – State title of text (and author if possible) especially in body paragraph(s)
