4 Possible Causes for Violence Include: Social problems, such as poverty, discrimination, child abuse, lack of family values, drug and alcohol addictions Cultural factors – e.g. violence portrayed in the media

6 WEAPONS Instrument or device used for violence. Concealed Weapon - weapon that is hidden from view.

8 Abuse Harmful treatment of another person. 1. Physical 2. Emotional (Verbal) 3. Sexual 4. Neglect

9 Physical abuse is harmful treatment that results in physical injury to the victim, Results of abuse include broken bones, bruises and cuts. Emotional Abuse (Verbal) is “putting down” another person & making them feel worthless.

10 Sexual Abuse is sexual contact that is forced on a person. Sexual abuse sometimes occurs between family members This is called Incest. Neglect - failure to provide proper care and guidance (food, safe shelter)

11 Signs of Abuse Poor grades Little interest in schoolwork Poorly dressed or poor hygiene Depressed Show suicidal tendencies Run away Be shy or afraid Miss school often Show aggressive behavior toward others

12 Sexual Harassment Unwanted sexual behavior that ranges from making unwanted sexual comments to forcing another person into unwanted sexual acts. Title IX, a federal law, makes it clear that sexual harassment should never occur in schools.

13 Rape Actual physical force to get someone to have sexual intercourse without consent. A person who does not willingly say yes has not given consent. Having sexual intercourse with a person who does not have certain mental abilities is considered rape.

14 Domestic Violence Violence that occurs within a family or in the same household. Husband v. wife Brother v. sister Cousin v. cousin Roommate v. roommate

15 Gangs Group of people who band together & participate in violent or criminal behavior. Probation - a sentence in which an offender remains in the community under the supervision of a probation officer for a specific amount of time.

16 Bullying An attempt by a person to hurt or frighten people who are weaker or smaller. A Bully is a person who hurts or frightens people who are smaller or weaker They may call someone names or make cruel remarks

17 Examples of Bullying Calling names Teasing Pushing or shoving Hitting, kicking or attacking Spreading rumors or gossip

18 Forcing others to hand over money Ignoring someone (make them feel left out) Attacking others because of their beliefs, religion or race.

19 Bullies are people with real problems Feelings of not fitting in Problems at home (divorce, abuse) Being bullied by parents or siblings Fear of being picked on Want to seem tough Feelings of anger, pain or low self- worth
