Properties of Matter Physical Science Chemical and Physical Properties

Chemical properties The way a substance reacts with others to form new substances with different properties Chemical properties involve the reactivity of elements or compounds

Physical properties A characteristic of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the components of the substance Examples include shape, color, odor, texture, melting point, boiling point, density, or change of state.

Physical Change Changes that do not involve composition After a physical change a substance may look different, but atoms that make up the substance are not changed or rearranged.

Chemical Changes Changes in composition of the element or compound. 5 signs of a chemical change 1. A new substance is formed with new properties 2. Color change (not there originally) Examples – paper yellowing or iron rusting 3. Change in energy Release of energy (gets hotter)- exothermic reaction. Example- explosion Absorption of energy (gets colder)- endothermic reaction. Example- ice pack 4. Formation of a gas Example- Seltzer tablet in water 5. Formation of a precipitate Put two liquids together and a powdery solid is formed. Example Lead (II) nitrate and Potassium iodide
