4 Explorers of SC 1st explorer to visit SC was Francisco Gordillo in 1521 1st European to see SC Gordillo visited the coastline near Winyah Bay or Myrtle Beach Hernando de Soto visited in 1540 looking for gold 1st European to explore interior of SC

1st-San Miguel de Gualdape (Spanish) Lucas Vasquez de Ayllon – July 1526-Jan. 1527 Near Waccamaw River - Georgetown 1st time African slaves were brought to SC Food ran out, Native Americans did not help de Ayllon died in October Slave revolt-November 1st in North America

2nd-Charlesfort and the region Carolus (French) Present day Parris Island, Port Royal Jean Ribault - May 1562 30 men were left behind, built a boat & sailed for France

3rd-Fort San Felipe (Spanish) Built on Parris Island in 1566 Captain Juan Pardo explored SC twice Indians attacked the Fort in July 1576 and settlers left

11 First Settlements in SC
4th-Fort San Marcos Spanish built it in built again on Parris Island Grew to have 60 houses English attacked St. Augustine, FL and Spanish left SC for good 83 years before any more European settlements were attempted in SC
