2 I. Spanish Exploration “In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue” and claimed land in New World for Spain. Spain sent other explorers and conquistadors to claim large areas of North America. They searched for gold then set up encomiendas (large plantations). Used natives as slaves. Many natives died from disease and overwork. Brought in Africans as slaves.

3 I. Spanish Exploration Spanish brought many things to the New World.
Built cities Started universities Style of government Catholicism Social class structure They expanded into North America looking for gold. Started settlements in Florida & SC. Started missions on Pacific coast.

4 II. French Exploration French explorers sailed down the St. Lawrence River and claimed the area for France. They started Montreal and Quebec. Not very many French moved here because of the cold, but they did bring their culture. Only French Catholics were allowed to move to the New World, so the colony was Catholic.

5 II. French Exploration French traders had a good relationship with the natives. Traders traveled along rivers including the Mississippi River. They named the area Louisiana after King Louis XIV.

6 III. English Exploration
English explorers sailed up and down the North American coast and claimed it for England. They started Virginia and New England farther north. Settlers came to find gold, found none, & stayed to grow tobacco.

Some settlers left England for religious freedom English settlers brought: Language. Protestant religion. Self-government.

8 IV. Exploration of SC Spain, France, & England tried to claim SC as a colony. Hernan de Soto (Spanish) explored for gold. France and Spain were unsuccessful in establishing a permanent colony. Spain founded San Miguel de Gualdape near what is Georgetown in 1520. They quickly abandoned it.

9 IV. Exploration of SC The French founded Charlesfort near present-day Beaufort in the 1560s. Quickly abandoned it. Spain started San Felipe where Charlesfort was. It lasted for 10 years before it was abandoned. They were attacked by Native Americans. Survivors went back to St. Augustine, Florida.

10 IV. Exploration of SC England created the 1st permanent settlement in SC. Charles Towne was founded in 1670. Started at Albemarle Point and moved to current location.
