Some Clarifications… Setting: The Shire, the home of the hobbits Hobbits are small, sturdy, simple creatures. They are a separate branch of humans. They are also called halflings. Bilbo, a hobbit, has the master ring that rules over all the other rings of power. (More about this in chapter 2). Gandalf is a wizard.

Add to your section 2 summary…. Although the ring has a hold on Bilbo, Bilbo still gives over the ring. This is the first time the ring has been given over willingly. Note: If you are confused about why the ring has power over Bilbo, just hang tight. History of the ring is revealed in chapter 2.

Frodo comes in after Bilbo leaves. Gandalf tells Frodo to keep the ring secret and safe.

As master of Bag End, Frodo distributes Bilbo’s presents and belongings to others. Bilbo’s disappearance causes quite a commotion.

Gandalf visits Frodo again and warns Frodo not to use the ring. Gandalf is clearly anxious about the ring. Gandalf leaves, and Frodo does not see him for a long time.
