Part 1: The Pulmo Park Blue Print Explore what you already know and what you can learn on your own. Carefully observe the flash animation called, The Anatomy of Breathing, at http://teachhealthk- 12.uthscsa.edu/studentresources/AnatomyofBreathing3.swfhttp://teachhealthk- 12.uthscsa.edu/studentresources/AnatomyofBreathing3.swf. As you watch, notice what is happening during inhaling and exhaling – see if you can figure out what makes it happen. INTRODUCTION EXHALE INHALE CONTINUOUS BREATHING TAKING A CLOSER LOOK

Part 2: Under Construction Station A 1.Record the number of molecules found in the inhaled air and exhaled air: Inhaled AirExhale Air N 2 = O 2 = O 2 = CO 2 =C O 2 = Ar = 2. How is image of the inhaled air like the image of the exhaled air? _________________________________________________________________________________ 3.How is the image of the inhaled air different from the exhaled air? _________________________________________________________________________________ 4.What do you think caused the differences? _________________________________________________________________________________ Point to Ponder: ___________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ Station B Record your observations and your explanation for what you think is causing the results. _________________________________________________________________________________ Point to Ponder: ___________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ Station C Record your observations _________________________________________________________________________________ Point to Ponder: ___________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ (SAME AS STATION B)

Station D Make observations ( ½ for water and the other ½ for the carbonated water) First After 1 After 2 colorminuteminutes What evidence have you found that indicates you breathe out carbon dioxide?__________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ Station E Make drawing and record data Point to Ponder: ___________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ Station F Record observations….. ….After 2 minutes _________________________________________________________________________________ …After 4 minutes _________________________________________________________________________________ Propose an explanation for what you observed:_________________________________________________________________________________ Point to Ponder: ___________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ Beaker ABeaker B

Part 3: Pulmo Park Builder’s Log Directions: Think back to each lab station you visited. Match the lab to the pulmonary function it demonstrates by placing the letter (A,B, C, D, E, F) assigned to the lab in the correct space. You will then need to follow the directions and illustrate in the drawing s what is happening? Draw in pulmonary veins/capillaries/ arteries using red /blue, that represent gas exchange. How much oxygen really gets in and how much carbon dioxide leaves in ratio to each other? What is the process of how gas exchanges in the alveoli? _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ Draw in the diaphragm in each person the way it should be contracting. What is happening to the volume and pressure in pulmonary ventilation? What do the arrows represent on the rib cage? _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________

Put the organs in order of how we inhale and exhale air. Using page 449 and page 461 you need to illustrate the respiratory membrane and its function. Include by adding in surfactant secreting cells, indicate and explain where air enters into the alveoli. What is the function of the alveoli and the surfactant secreting cells? How did this lab represent the surfactant cell? What is the purpose of the surfactant cell? _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________
