1 Websites of students for take-home examination INTED2008. International Technology, Education and Development Conference, Valencia, March 3rd-5th, 2008 Session Experiences in Education: New projects and innovations, Tuesday, 4th March 2008.10.00hr Room No.2 Prof.dr.ir. Taeke M. De Jong, chair Technical Ecology And Methodology, sharing a chair Regional Design Faculty of Architecture, department Urbanism

Three examples of application Territory Methodology Environmental impacts For these courses, more than 1500 students made a personal website

Assignments Territory

Assignments Ways to Study Make your own website and publish: 1. previous own design work, for example from the preceding semester; ……. 15. a short critical reflection on points 1-16 of a website of one of the other participants of this course (or earlier versions); 16. a source list and colophon of the site, making sure all data are retrievable and searchable for judgment.

Assignment environmental data choose an impact X on Y; X|Y={A,B,C,D,E,F}

Assignment environmental data Describe X and its possible impacts on Y quantitatively – consulting http://arch.rivm.nl/environmentaldata/ – Name the radius of impact R={1,3,10,30 … 10 000 000m} – Name the term of impact T={1,10,100 or 1000 years}

Advantages of a website … the line of thought still can be a tree or matrix, –storing sidelines of thought in links, –finding a personal main line gradually, –keeping valuable associations at hand, including drawings and animations in color, –clarifying sequences and layers of thought better than words, –doing justice to the requirements of design, easy to change real time, –even in its thought structure;

compared to hard copy document its rigid linear structure, –limits the use of links, images, overlays, animations, –branches of thought have to be separated and stored in footnotes, endnotes and appendices, –with many time consuming lay-out and print difficulties, from an educational point of view a next step, –if the line of thought is still in progress, –because judgement and support are needed most half way;

Closer to current generation a website is common to the internet generation, –motivated by instantaneous pressing links, –developing durable themes of interest by doing, probably disturbing a preconceived line of search, –but stimulating new lines of thought, –flexible, but increasingly critical thinking, –new combinations suitable for design, –beyond existing categories (legend units in drawings);

The challenge of publishing student’s websites are often a portfolio in progress, –suitable for applications after graduation; –giving a more complete image of the student, –and his or her context, stimulating by itself to give proper account to a worldwide audience, –a transferable reflection at the personal portfolio, –with some distance to own work, –choosing words many target groups should understand, –avoiding own obscure jargon;

Enabling interaction students can learn from each others’ website, –if a critical review of other websites is asked, –to stimulate a scientific ability to criticise, and eagerness –to be criticised by other people than the accidental teacher, useful in design exercises, –connecting students and teachers, –connecting different projects, –otherwise unknown to students and teachers, –because they are operating separately in different projects;

Enabling flexible judgment easily accessible for judgment, –at any time, –without accommodating a location for examination, –mutually controllable by different judges, –on preconceived and published criteria, if, with agreement of the student, the judgement is published on the internet in detail, –than discussing the judgement is easy, –stimulating chats between student and teacher, –enabling immediate improvements, –with fast and easy re-examination of parts;

Evaluating design education websites report the progress of design education –in a retrievable way, –controlling teachers, –monitored through the years, –in favour of changing educational strategy, –based on retrievable facts; design work remains accessible for researchers; –to be used in their publications; –integrating the valuable products of a school in their research.
