7 Here we come!  Matthew Perry sails into Edo Bay in July of 1853  Perry was a commodore in Navy  Carried with him a letter from Milliard Fillmore.  What made the U.S interested in Japan?

9  "giant dragons puffing smoke."  Japan had no idea steamships existed.  Were frightened by the immense size and power of the guns on the ships.  Perry delivers letter and tells Japanese to “think it over” he will return the following year for an answer  What should the Japanese do??????

12  New emperor was 15 years old  Meiji reformers ruled in Emperors name  “A Rich country, strong Military”  Meiji reformers set out to study western ways and adapt them to Japanese needs.  Sent younger samurai to study overseas and brought in westerners to help.

13  Modern Government  Meiji constitution  All citizens were equal under the law  Emperor had absolute power  Diet  Legislature 1 house elected, 1 appointed by emperor  Westernized Army  All men had to enlist  Effect on Samurai?

14  Encouraged the adoption of Western Methods  Banking, railroads, telegraphs  Gov’t built factories than sold them to wealthy families  Powerful banking and industrial families were called Zaibatsu  By 1890 Industry was booming  Results very similar to Industrial revolution in west
