5 What’s the Issue Crime in the neighboring area (Census Track 21) is up 138% to 46 crimes per 1000 in 2006 vs. 2005. (Note: 82% vs. 2004) Two known issues: – Local: People from neighboring communities use the MP recreational facilities, and also cut through the neighborhood in vehicles (two shootings in 2007) – Distant: The neighborhood has been targeted by distant organizations for auto theft and burglary. (88% increase in auto thefts in 2006)

6 What to do? Ask East Palo Alto PD and Palo Alto PD to get involved. This issue can not be resolved only within the context of MP. Change MPPD policy on dispatch in Beat 2. – My understanding is that current policy is to dispatch 2 officers to Beats 1 and 3 and only 1 or two officers to Beat 2 (includes The Willows) Beat 1 (West of El Camino) Beat 2 (El Camino to 101) Beat 3 (East of 101)

7 What to do? Institute some traffic calming measures to further reduce cut-through traffic through the Willows. (in particular from North to South) Increase MPPD headcount as requested. – My understanding is that MPPD has asked for additional in order to staff a motorcycle patrol focused on traffic issues. Create a strike-force to deal with the vehicle theft issue. (Include state and federal authorities as needed)
