8 Big Ideas Physics A wide range of technologies utilize the properties of light and colour. The behaviour of light depends on the materials with which it interacts. Light is a form of energy, produced from a variety of sources, and can be transformed into other useful forms of energy.

9 Overall Expectations Analyse how properties of light and colour are applied in technology and the impact of these technologies on society. Investigate, through inquiry, properties of light, and predict its behaviour in mirrors and as it passes through different media. Demonstrate an understanding of characteristics and properties of light, particularly with respect to reflection and refraction and the addition and subtraction of colour.

10 Specific Expectations
Relating Science to Technology Society, and the Environment Analyse how additive and/or subtractive colour theory are applied in technologies used in everyday life Describe the role of selectetd optical technologies in the transmission of information, and lanalyse their impact on society

11 Specific Expectations
Developing Skills of Investigation and Communication Use appropriate terminology related to light and optics Use an inquiry process to investigate the laws of reflection; use these laws to explain the characteristics of images formed by plane, converging (concave), and diverging (convex) mirrors; and draw ray diagrams to illustrate their observations Use inquiry process to investigate the refraction of light as it passes through a variety of media Inquiry: Mirrors Fishing Activity

12 Specific Expectations
Developing Skills of Investigation and Communication (cont’d) Predict the qualitative characteristics of images formed by converging lenses, test their predictions through inquiry, and draw ray diagrams to record their observations Investigate how various objects or media reflect, transmit, or absorb light, and record their observations using ray diagrams Predict the effect of shining a coloured light on objects of different colours, and test their predictions through inquiry Construct an optical device that uses a variety of mirrors Lenses Activity Colour Wheel

13 Specific Expectations
Understanding Basic Concepts Describe various types of light emisions and how they produce light Identify and label the visible and invisible regions of the electromagnetc spectrum, and identify the colours that make up visible white light Explain the laws of reflection of light, and identify ways in which light reflects from various types of mirrors

14 Specific Expectations
Understanding Basic Concepts (cont’d) Describe qualitativetly how visible light is refracted at the interface between two different media Use additive colour theory to predict the ressults of combining primary and secondary light colours Use subtractive colour theory to describe the effect of colour filters on white light

15 Specific Expectations
Understanding Basic Concepts (cont’d) Explain how the colour of an object is determined by reflection, absorption, and transmission of colour Explain how the properties of light or colour are applied in the operation of an optical device Pinhole Camera

22 Safety Considerations

23 Light sources can become hot and students should be advised not to shine light in their eyes
Mirrors and lenses can sometimes have sharp edges or can break so they should be handled carefully Many activities in optics require you to have the lights out, this may not be a great idea depending on the students in your class
