1 Georgia Colony By: Nicholas and Luke

2 Introduction It’s name is the Georgia colony It was founded in 1733
Edward Oglethorpe founded the colony A reason that the Georgia colony was founded was to keep the Spanish in Florida away from English claims It's settlers were usually people who couldn’t pay their debts

3 First People The native Americans were the first to settle in today's Georgia The tribes were the creek and the Cherokee They both grew squash, corn and beans They both hunted deer, bear and birds The creek gathered oysters and clams The fished for bass and trout The creek built huts of mud and bark Cherokee built homes of grass, bark and mud Creek villages held about 1,000 people

4 Early Settlers The Spanish people were the first to come to Georgia after the Indians French and British traded hides to the Indians in the 1500’s Spanish missionaries came to North America to spread Catholic religions but usually failed In the 1700’s all the people in the settlement would be sent to jail if they couldn’t pay their bills James Edward Oglethorpe had the idea to send people who failed to pay their bills to colonize Georgia

5 Life in the Colony Georgia colony had few schools
They bought rice, wheat, beans, and flour until they could grow squash, corn, peas and rice They also hunted deer, turkey and geese They fished in the Savannah river They failed to grow grapes, olives and silk worms They raised cattle, pigs, and horses

6 Life in the Colony In 1739 a war broke out with Spain and great Britain The war took place in southern Georgia and Florida In 1742 Spain attacked Georgia and the Battle of Bloody Marsh took broke out The battle took place near Fort Frederica on St. Simons Island James Oglethorpe and his troops won the battle

7 Work and Trade in the colony
They farmed and raised livestock They used indigo remove die Traded with the American Indians, and the British Indians would trade furs to the colonists and receive guns in return

8 More Work and Trade The trustees made it illegal to have slaves in the Georgia Indentured servants were still allowed In 1779 the trustees changed the law and made slaves legal again. Some of the major jobs were farmers, bakers, shoe makers, masons, and wood cutters

9 Exports Agricultural exports contain indigo, pork, and rice
Industrial exports contain pottery Natural export are clay and lumber

10 Community and Religion
Some Europeans came to Georgia because they were punished for religious beliefs in Europe Georgia had religious freedom The major religions were Lutherans, and Presbyterian Catholics were not allowed in the Georgia colony

In 1758 Georgia made the Church of England was made the official religion The government divided the colony into 12 parishes each parish hade a church The church kept track of everything in the colony All people had to pay a church tax The church tax goes to support the priest and the poor People weren’t forced to join the church of England

12 Becoming a state Georgia never sent anyone to the first continental congress but agreed to the conditions made at the meeting British soldiers took control of Savannah After many battles the American soldiers pushed the British out of Savannah Georgia (colony) (state)

13 State Gaining Statehood Georgia was the fourth state to be founded
Georgia became a state in 1788 Georgia became a state because it agreed to the constitution State

14 Important facts Georgia colonist were gave gifts to live their new lives each family were given passage to North America, tools, land, and seeds Savannah was the first settlement in Georgia and was also the first state capital James thought that alcohol was the reason for all the sickness so in 1733 Oglethorpe stopped rum trading in the colony Augusta became a major trading place
