 Music has a good deal of influence on itself  Sometimes from culture to culture and sometimes from style to style.  The blending of styles is very significant and allows music to grow and evolve.

 Folk to Classical:  Classical composers have frequently used folk songs as a source of inspiration for their compositions.  Edvard Grieg- one of the first composers to use this rhythmic and melodic flavor of folk songs in his compositions.

 1 st solo musician from America to become world renowned  Born in New Orleans  1 st nationalistic composer

 A lot of composers during the late 1800’s and throughout the 1900’s were considered “nationalistic”.  Nationalistic- music deliberately reflecting and asserting ones culture

 Gottschalk used these scales to add folklike flavor rather than just using major scales.  Pentatonic scale- any scale that is made up of 5 tones within the octave

 Classical music has also been influenced by Jazz, especially during the twentieth century.  Jazz was making its way around the world during this time growing popularity in France.

 French composer 1862-1918  Credited for being the creator of the musical style known as Impressionism  Exploring new avenues of harmony, timbres and texture he prepared the world for modern improvisation.

 Classical melodies are often popularized  Whole Broadway shows have been created by these means as well  Jazz musicians often base their improvisations on themes of other composers  Ex. John Lewis- once recorded an entire album based on the music of Johann Sebastian Bach  Listen to “One Diamond”- Identify when the styles change

 Culture is everywhere today and is usually shared in music  American popular music encircles the world  Process in anthropology called acculturation- the mutual influence of different cultures in close contact

 The merging of styles  Not usually total or exclusive  Sharing musical ideas across cultures happens in many ways  This is how new styles of music are formed

 Protesting through music or artistic expression has been around for a long time.  Music has played the most pivotal role in issues all over culture and politics.  South Africa is well known for its powerful messages in their music to fight back at their government

 West African music has had an enormous impact on our popular musical styles  Leader and chorus (also called call and response)  Repetition  Emphasis on percussion sounds  Highly developed improvisation  Time Line- basic rhythmic pattern that provides the foundation for the complex rhythms played by multiple drums

 American composer- 1898-1937  Extended the borders of musical style  Created a hybrid of musical communication that combined elements of both classical and popular music.  Wanted to show people that Jazz music was just as respectable as classical music.

 Composers and performers continue to mix and merge different styles  Why?- Musicians are fascinated with new sounds that they hear and is one of the main ways in which music can evolve.  Good musicians look at different styles as opportunities rather than barriers
