2 Welcome to Third Grade! If you have any questions during our presentation, please write it on an index card and questions will be addressed at the end of our meeting. Questions specific to your child… - Please indicate on the sign-in sheet that you would like the teacher to contact you. -Include your contact preference and up-to-date information.

3 Our Goals To provide your child with the academic and social skills necessary to progress to fourth grade. To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment. To help students make new friends and discover new interests.

4 Class Subjects The subjects we cover during third grade are: –Reading and Writing –Math –Science –Social studies

5 Reading Houghton Mifflin Six Themes Daily Guided Reading to focus on reading strategies, vocabulary and comprehension BCR-Brief Constructed Response

6 Writing Writing grades consist of the following: Complete Sentences Grammar Punctuation Editing and Revising

7 Math Houghton Mifflin Math Expressions Flex groups to meet the needs of students COMING SOON: Multiplication Completion grade for homework each marking period

10 Classroom Community Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other. We will focus on a positive behavior system: –Practice Respect –Act Responsibly –Work Hard –Stay Safe

11 What is PBIS? PBIS: Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (AKA: SWPBS or Sw-PBIS) Underlying Theme: –T–Teaching behavioral expectations in the same manner as core subjects

12 PBIS is a: –D–Decision making framework that assists schools in adopting effective practices for all students and creating a school-wide behavior system that addresses the entire school—all students in all school settings

13 What Does PBIS Look Like? Cub PAWS are used to provide immediate feedback and allow students the opportunity to earn tangible rewards Management Flowchart Minor Incident Report Office Referral

18 Homework Math –Monday through Thursday Spelling –Test on Friday – Homework is optional – Menu of suggested activities provided –All spelling and vocabulary lists will be sent home at the beginning of each reading theme. Vocabulary –Quiz on Friday

19 Student Work Practice work is checked or stamped Graded work will have a letter grade and percentage printed on it. If you wish to monitor your students grades using Power School, please contact the office during school hours.

20 Field Trips We are working on finalizing our field trips. We will visit… – Fair Hill Nature Center We “hope to” visit… – Herr’s Snack Foods – The Amish Farm – Rock Quarry Final plans will be shared with parents and students as soon as they have been confirmed.
