1 Welcome to Back to School Night Woodcrest School Room 21 Mrs. Wolf

2 Welcome to the 2013-14 school Year This time is for general information only. Specific concerns about your student can be addressed at conference time. Please sign up for a conference time on the back table!

3 A little about me… Teaching credential and BA from Cal State Fullerton I have a master’s degree at Brandman University Sixth year in Fullerton School District Married with two children, ages 14 and 18 I like to read, go to the movies, and travel

6 Class Matrix Classroom matrix is our guide to how to behave in most common scenarios in the classroom. Our class has practiced every element of this matrix and are experts! Please keep the matrix for your reference.

7 Rewards and Consequences PAWS! Incentives, such as t-shirts, buttons, movie/popcorn, game days, etc. are given when specific goals are met. Consequences range from a warning, to loss of recess, and after school detention, with a note home, depending on whether it is a minor or major infraction

8 Academics The academics are based on the 6 th grade educational for the State of California. Standardized testing is given at the district level in English Language Arts, Math, and Writing Textbooks used are on display on the whiteboard tray. State standardized testing is done in English Language Arts and Math. Formal and Informal assessments are given frequently to monitor progress. Tests are sent home in the weekly folder.

9 Academics Structured ELD classes began soon Students are placed based on EL level English Only students participate in a technology, research, organization, and study skills enrichment program

10 Homework Homework is given nightly Monday through Thursday. Usually, a little math is given over the weekend. Students are responsible for making sure they have all the materials, resources, and instructions prior to leaving. Generally, homework is given in ELA or spelling, math, and Reading every night.

11 Homework (continued) Science and Social Studies homework is generally given at least twice a week. Writing is at least given once a week Long term project outlines are sent at least 3 weeks before they are due. Reminders and notices should be written in their planners.

12 Homework Help Homework help is available in my room on most Mondays, and Tuesdays 2:45- 3:30 Any student can come and get help with their work.

13 Science Fair All 6 th grade students participate in the Science Fair. The Science Fair takes place in May. Specific guidelines for the fair will be given at a later day Judges are educators and people from the science community

14 Projects!! Every month there is a project You usually have 3 weeks to complete Some of them are: fiction book reports, ancient civilization reports, and Gods/Goddesses Reports Oral reports are also given with each one

15 Number the Stars Later in the year, we are going to read the novel, Number the Stars by Lois Lowry It is a WWII novel about a girl who helps her friends escape the Nazi’s

16 1:1 Technology This year, we have 1:1 mobile technology! We will use it for math fluency, grammar, writing, research, and for turning in assignments digitally Students will also use this device for sharing projects Some of the Apps we will use are: Digit Wiz, iMovie, Haiku, Photo Booth, and Edmodo

17 Healthy Parties/Birthdays In keeping with district guidelines, we are asking that any food brought in for parties or birthdays be healthy. Please see me to make arrangements for Birthday celebrations Any birthday celebrations must be done at lunch and not take away from instructional time. Let’s work together to keep our kids healthy!

18 Fall Carnival In late October, our class will be participating in Fall Carnival We will be doing 3 games. Any parent support would be greatly appreciated! Our sale helped fund fields trips and supplies for our class

19 After School Program We have on site after school care After school program teachers offer help in all subject areas Students have the opportunity to participate in sports, crafts, and cheerleading It’s FREE!

20 Final Notes Students in my class are all referred to as scholars. It is my firm educational philosophy that ALL students can succeed and do well. As a result, high standards are placed on students for academic performance, behavior, as well as civil responsibility. In addition, my goal is to help students become self reliant, responsible problem solvers.
