How to add pictures or links Tim Wilcock 2 November 2008

Step 1 – create the page text These notes will deal with creating a page but the principles are the same for stories or event. Adding pictures or links should be the last step in the process. First compose your text for the page in a word processor or text editor and make sure you are happy with how it reads and the spelling/punctuation. Open up a new page. Copy and paste the text into the editor and make sure it previews to the right look, Set up the page title, tagging to groups etc. and add the page into the menu structure at the position required.

Step 2 – prepare the images Now prepare your images for the page. Also remember copyright – you must have rights or permission to use any images uploaded. You should not be adding images of more than 50-100K to the page. Bearing in mind that digital camera images are generally several megabytes each in size you should not add these directly. In order to get your images to the right size (in K) you will need to use an image editing programme to slim them down. If done correctly this should not reduce perceptibly the quality. I can do this for you if you do not have facilities - just email me the picture. The page editor will resize the picture in terms of on page measurement (in pixels) but will not reduce the physical size of the image file so it is important to complete the above before you upload anything.

Step 3 – Image Options box Before you can insert the pictures into the text you need to upload them. Firstly insert the cursor at roughly the point in the text where you want the picture to appear. Click on the Add image button The Image Options dialogue box will appear Click Browse to select an image on your PC

Step 4 : Upload Images Select the image and click Open Then click on Upload Image to actually upload to the web site folder where images are stored Then click on Select Image to choose the image to go on your page

Step 5 : selecting the image This will present a box with all site images on it Double click on the selected image This will place the image location into the Image URL box

Step 6 : image parameters You can now complete the process by selecting the image parameters The Size parameter will alter the look of the image to a specific size (but will not reduce the file size) Text flow will govern how the text flows around the image at the insertion point and this will need a lot of trial and error with the Size parameters to get the look you want Padding governs the amount of white space between image and text; Border defines whether images have a border around them – site style is none. Description allows for a caption (I cannot get this to work as I want it currently) Link URL – images can be links to other pages Leave Open in Other Window blank

Step 7 : image finalisation Now click in the text box and your image should appear You may need to double click it and re-enter the size to get it right You will need a lot of practice and trial and error to get the images looking as you want them – this is probably the most difficult part of the whole process. Keep images relevant and fewer rather than more especially on events which should need few images Let me have your feedback and comments/questions so I can then feed your experiences back to the others.

Adding links A link is formed of selected text which links to another page on the webselected text Firstly highlight the text in the editor which you want to use to form your link The Image link icon will then be available. Click on this and the Link Options box will appear Enter the page URL you want to link to into the Link URL: box Leave the Open in a New Window box unchecked Optionally enter a description of the link into the box at the bottom If you are editing and want to remove a link, highlight it and then use the Remove link from text option
