Viruses

A virus is a piece or harmful computer software It gets into your computer through websites on the internet A virus can delete your files, share your personal information with people and make your computer freeze. Overall, it makes your computer sick

There are Different Types of Viruses These are some of them… Overwrite viruses: these will get into your computer and delete or replace your files Boot viruses: these harm your computer’s hard disk and can stop your computer from booting up properly Trojans: these are viruses disguised as nice things so that you will click on them

How to protect yourself against viruses If you get a virus, tell an adult- they can fix it for you To get rid of computer viruses, you can get anti-virus software These can be bought or downloaded over the internet or bought on a disc The anti-virus software searches for the viruses on your computer and gets rid of them

But there are a few problems with using anti-virus software First of all, some anti-virus software can be pricey and sometimes the cost of it isn’t be worth the quality of the protection. Its good to look around to find the best deal. Also, having anti-virus software running can slow down your internet connection The anti-virus software will need to be updated regularly to make sure it can detect the latest viruses. However, apart from needing to restart the computer sometimes, this shouldn’t be any trouble- the updates are automatic.

Overall, it is good to get virus protection, as your computer could be seriously harmed without it. To protect further against viruses, just visit trustworthy websites that you know are safe. If you are unsure about anything, don’t click on it. And lastly, if you are worried about anything on the internet, just ask an adult

Hacking

Hacking is when someone accesses your computer files without your permission Hackers can get into your computer files through emails, or if you leave your internet connection on when you are not using your computer. Hackers can look through your files, pictures and documents, change your details, send information and mess about with your finances.

How can you stop hackers? You can stop hackers from getting into your computer by installing a firewall, this makes it very hard for them to access your files. You should turn off your internet connection when you are done using it. (The perfect time for hackers to get to your computer is when you leave the internet on) Don’t click on any emails that you do not know the sender of

Backing Up

Why do you need to back up your files? It is very important to back up your files so that if they are lost or deleted, you can bring them back. You can keep your backed up information on a memory stick, a CD or a hard drive. Once you have backed up your files, you can keep them safe by encrypting them. This means to put a password on the backup so that hackers cannot reach them.

Ways to back up A full backup saves all of a file so that you can just replace it. However this takes up more space and takes longer to back up. You can also just back up the parts that you have changed recently. Some people like to take snapshots of their work to recreate later Or you can make a second copy and keep it on another computer (for example, a parent’s)

My memory stick I save my file into my homework folder on a USB memory stick. It has a clear file name telling me what it is. Backing up the presentation
