What is Ozone Depletion? Ozone depletion is when CFCs, or chlorofluorocarbon molecules, react with the ozone, making a oxygen molecule, and carbon dioxide out of an ozone molecule. This results in holes in the ozone. From this, UV rays enter the Earths atmosphere, which causes global warming.

Where Is It Happening? Ozone depletion is happening everywhere, but is very severe above Antarctica. As a result of the UV rays glaciers are melting and animals like polar bears are becoming extinct from lack ice.

How Are We Causing It? We as humans are causing ozone depletion by using CFCs. These are things like propellants for aerosol cans, coolants in air conditioning, coolants in refrigerators, Styrofoam and medical sterilizers. They’re also used in fire extinguishers and during many industrial processes.

What If It Isn’t Stopped? The ozone is vital to keep UV rays out of the earth’s atmosphere. Since the ozone is being destroyed by CFCs, UV rays will enter the earth. The UV rays will heat up the earth. Also the rays are more powerful leading to people getting skin cancer easier.

How Can I Help? Since CFCs cause ozone depletion, you can reduce using products that release CFCs. For example turn you air condition off when you leave your house. Instead of using Styrofoam for packaging, use bubble wrap. These things might seem insignificant, but if many people do this then ozone depletion will decrease.

How it Effects the Carbon Cycle CFC is made up of chlorine, fluoride, and carbon. When CFC enters the ozone, it reacts with the ozone. A oxygen and carbon dioxide molecule result from the CFC reacting with a ozone molecule. This means that there is more carbon dioxide in the Earth, because there are not enough plants to use the carbon dioxide for photosynthesis. The carbon dioxide is trapping the heat that would have gone back into the atmosphere. As a result the Earth is getting warmer.
