STRUCTURE: includes introductory, body, concluding paragraphs; clear transitions between paragraphs; uses topic sentences and concluding sentences; well-organized with clear transitions between ideas ( 0 1 2 3 4 ) MECHANICS: ___/3: few, or minor, errors in mechanics; uses correct tense ( 0 1 2 3 ) Steps to Constructing a Quality Answer for an Essay: Refer to “Constructing an Essay” reading. I.Analyze the Question Carefully: Without a clear understanding of all parts of the question, you cannot develop a strong thesis or write an adequate answer. II. Gather and Organize Specific, Factual Information Pertinent to the Question III. Develop a Thesis: Create a clear, ONE sentence thesis that includes a position on the question, all parts of the question, the time period and organizational categories. The position on the question must be evident. IV. Outline the Answer: Cover the whole question. V. Writing the Introduction: The paper must have an introductory paragraph, consisting of 4 to 5 sentences, that introduces the time period of the question and has the thesis as its FINAL sentence. VI. Writing the Body Paragraphs: Each body paragraph must contain a topic sentence that ties to the thesis, and sets up the paragraph’s argument. Facts must be offered to convince the reader to the argument you are making. Every sentence must contribute to the thesis. A concluding sentence is used to wrap up the paragraph’s argument, not to introduce the next paragraph. VII. Writing the Conclusion: The paper must have a concluding paragraph, consisting of 5 to 6 sentences, wrapping up the major points of the essay and establishing a link to a future event, policy, person, etc. VIII. Proofing the Essay: Refer to readings: “Writing Mechanics & Style” and “Evaluation Criteria Model for Grading.”
