3 Design Problem & Design Brief Design Problem Heat stroke  Third leading cause of death among athletes in the United States. Overexertion in conditions of high temperature and high humidity increases heart rate to unsafe ranges and prevents the body from effectively dissipating heat. Exhaustion and cramps caused by overheating are common problems in athletes Hyperthermia  Thermoregulatory mechanisms become overwhelmed and fail, possibly leading to organ damage or death. Symptoms: Seizures, disorientation, confusion, unconsciousness, coma Design Brief Athletes and trainers need a device to monitor temperature and heart rate A wireless device to be conveniently and comfortably worn on the body during athletic activity. A receiver that processes the data and alerts user to stop activity when temperature and/or heart rate deviates from safe range.

6 Specifications and Constraints Measures BOTH heart rate and body temperature, allows for prediction of heat exhaustion, not just a training tool. Wireless technology ensures portability of device. The device must be comfortable to wear so as to not hinder athletic performance. Accuracy of measurements is essential to prevent fatality and unnecessary withdrawal from athletic events. The cost to buy the device must be minimized so that school athletic programs can afford it.

7 Specifications and Constraints Will be water resistant to prevent electric shock. Battery life will be sufficient to power device through the length of athletic events. Temperature and heart rate measurements will be easily readable by the user/trainer and equipped with an alarm for when unsafe levels are reached. Customer: Athletic departments, e.g. college level and below User: Athletes of organized sports, e.g. football and cross country
