1 Cell Review Eukaryotes Animal Cell Bacteria Prokaryotes Plant Cell
In this unit, you will revisited elements of the Eukaryotic Cells (animal and plant cells) and Prokaryotic Cells (Bacteria) that were discussed last year. Although most of this lesson will consist of the names and functions of cell organelles, there will be discussion related to the elements of Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic Cells

2 Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic
Know This….. Principles of cell theory: 1. All living things are made of cells. 2. Cells carry out the functions needed to support life. 3. Cells come only from other living cells. Two Types of Cells Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic Click the link below to view a video clip related to Microbiology that discusses how scientist believe the first cells developed. Origin of Life – Cells & Microbiology

3 Some Facts Prokaryotes First cells to evolve
They have no nuclear membrane. This means that the genetic material (DNA) floats about within the cell. Have no organelles All are single – celled Are smaller than Eukaryotic cells Most common example of prokaryotic cells are bacteria. Eukaryotes Evolved from prokaryotes They have organelles and each is contained with it own membrane Have a cytoskeleton They have a center called a nucleus that has a membrane. The genetic material of a eukaryotic cell is contained inside the nucleus which is the largest organelle within a eukaryotic cell. They are larger than prokaryotic cells and more complex. Animal and plant cells are examples of eukaryotic cells. Elements Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic have in common Have ribosomes Have DNA Have cytoplasm Have a cell membrane

4 Organelles Cell Organelle and Functions. Instructions:
Review the list of organelles below. On the handout, use the link below to identify the function of each organelle. When the link opens, click on Plant Cell. Keep your responses short. but be sure to indicate whether the organelle is part of an animal cell, a plant cell, or both. When you have completed the “Cell Organelle Functions” handout, use the same link to label the attached diagrams of an animal and plant cell. When you have completed the attached animal and plant cell diagrams, copy and provide a complete response to the analysis questions in your science notebook Organelles Cytosol / Cytoplasm Centrosomes Micro-tubules Peroxisomes Cytoskeleton Chloroplast Ribosomes Secretory Vesicles Golgi Body Cell membrane Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (Rough ER) Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (Smooth ER) Nucleus Nucleolus Cell wall Vacuoles Mitochondria Lysosomes Cell Organelle and Functions.

5 Analysis Copy the following in your science notebook and provise a complete response to each
List three differences between a plant cell. and an animal cell. Where is the genetic material (DNA) found in a eukaryotic cell? What is photosynthesis and where does it occur? List the three components of Cell Theory

6 Create a venn diagram comparing eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells
