1 The Interior Castle St. Teresa of Avila

2 The Interior Castle, or The Mansions, was written by St. Teresa of Ávila, O.C.D., the Spanish Discalced Carmelite nun and famed mystic, in 1577 as a guide for spiritual development through service and prayer. It was inspired by her vision of the soul as a crystal globe in the shape of a castle containing seven mansions, which she interpreted as the journey of faith through seven stages, ending with union with God. According to a letter written by Fray Diego, one of Teresa's former confessors, Teresa was finally convinced to write her book after she received a vision from God. Diego wrote that God revealed to Teresa: "...a most beautiful crystal globe, made in the shape of a castle, and containing seven mansions, in the seventh and innermost of which was the King of Glory, in the greatest splendor, illumining and beautifying them all. The nearer one got to the center, the stronger was the light; outside the palace limits everything was foul, dark and infested with toads, vipers and other venomous creatures."

5 The Sets of Mansions In this book, she presents a model of the human soul as a castle cut from a single diamond. This castle is divided into seven groups of mansions, beginning at the outer gate and moving inward toward the center. We enter the castle whenever we pray, for the gate to the outermost mansion is prayer. (Those who never pray remain in a courtyard outside the gate with the toads and all that is foul. People in this state are stuck in sin.) The first three mansions are considered to be ordinary prayer or active prayer. Mansions 4-7 are considered to be contemplative prayer (Mystical or passive.)

6 Divide class into 7 groups. Each group gets a set of Mansions (1-7) Go through your reading with your partners. Present your set of mansions to the class tomorrow!
