CACHE Learning Resource Center Product and Process Design Web Site June 2, 2011

CACHE LRC - Product and Process Design Web Site 2 2 2 Guide to Teaching Design with Internet Links Provides guidance for teaching product and process design with recommended links to websites associated with: Textbooks Monographs Completed design case studies Design problem statements Design software POWER POINT lectures prepared by design instructors.

CACHE LRC - Product and Process Design Web Site 3 3 3 3 Initial Guide has Materials in: Product design (Warren D. Seider) Process integration (Mahmoud El-Halwagi) Process simulation (Warren D. Seider, Chau-Chyun Chen) Equipment design (Gavin Towler) Environment (David Shonnard) Safety (Dan Crowl) Design optimization – Process synthesis (Ignacio Grossmann) Design optimization – Process flowsheets (Larry Biegler) Design case studies (Ignacio Grossmann) Design problem statements (Joseph Shaeiwitz, Richard Turton) with materials promised in: Process flowsheet synthesis Batch process design Computational fluid dynamics Energy - to Tom Edgar for installation on LRC in July.

CACHE LRC - Product and Process Design Web Site 4 4 Typical Entry – Product Design Molecular Structure Design Often molecular structure design is used to identify chemical products having the properties required by customers. Techniques and examples are presented by: Wei, J., Product Engineering, Oxford Univ. Press, 2007. Wei, J., Product Engineering, Oxford Univ. Press, 2007. http://ukcatalogue.oup.com/... http://ukcatalogue.oup.com/...http://ukcatalogue.oup.com/ Seider, W.D., et al., Product and Process Design Principles, 3 rd Seider, W.D., et al., Product and Process Design Principles, 3 rd Ed., Wiley, 2009 – Chapter 3 Ed., Wiley, 2009 – Chapter 3 http://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/... http://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/...http://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/ Teaching materials are available that use ProCAMD software developed at the Denmark Technical University (DTU). ProCAMD carries out molecular structure design using extensive thermophysical property databases, mostly with group contribution methods. The user specifies the desired property values, with upper and lower bounds on other property values, and other desired properties. To download the teaching materials: [enter link] [enter link]

CACHE LRC - Product and Process Design Web Site 5 Roles of Area Editors - create text - identify and confirm quality of links - check links annually – confirm operational and timely - introduce new links annually Introduce Guide to ChE Instructors CACHE News – Summer 2011 Presentation at Minneapolis AIChE Meeting Proposed Workshop at ASEE Summer School in 2012

CACHE LRC - Product and Process Design Web Site 66 Questions Can an article be written of sufficiently broad interest for CEP? - not just to introduce instructors to resources for teaching design. - will decide after the article for instructors is completed. Should the text and links be organized to guide students, practitioners, …, obtain design materials, answers to questions, …? - a much broader objective - will consider as materials are created for instructors

CACHE LRC - Product and Process Design Web Site 7 7 77 For Internet searches involving common key words, can advice be provided easily by the area editors? e.g., “mixers” under equipment design preferred term – “agitators” For areas having major web sites (e.g., CFD), how do area editors select subareas of importance and provide guidance through the web sites? e.g., in CFD, the focus might be on the design of chemical reactors.

CACHE LRC - Product and Process Design Web Site 8 888 How will web sites be created? By CACHE web person? By Product and Process Design Editor? By Area Editors? Can the user interfaces be improved easily? Can data on hits be easily accumulated and analyzed to assist area editors and interested individuals?

CACHE LRC - Product and Process Design Web Site 999 Are AIChE Student Contest Problems (1932-present) available to appear on the CACHE web site with prize-winning solutions? Do contest problems track well the development of our profession? Commodity chemicals Unit operations Process simulation Specialty chemicals Batch processing Pharmaceuticals Product design : Any emphasis on: Molecular modeling? Electronic materials? Labs-on-a-chip, Microfluidics? Use of CFD? Since early May, Ignacio has been waiting for response from AIChE Contacts: Felicia Guglielmi Felicia Guglielmi June Lee June Lee

CACHE LRC - Product and Process Design Web Site 10 CACHE LRC - Product and Process Design Web Site 10 CACHE LRC - Product and Process Design Web Site 10 Should CACHE Undertake to Prepare Guides in Other Subject Areas? Possibly in Process Control Molecular Modeling. Can up-to-date, useful links for 27 other subject areas be maintained without editorial control and the help of area editors? How are current links maintained?

CACHE LRC - Product and Process Design Web Site 11 Who is teaching design? What are they teaching? Tenured faculty? Assistant professors? Untenured faculty? Industrial affiliation? Retired from industry? Number of design courses – brief summary Teaching process design? Teaching product design? During next year will prepare a brief survey distributed by the CACHE Office. Results distributed by the CACHE Office. Results will be posted on the LRC website. will be posted on the LRC website. - details to be worked out - details to be worked out
