9  This is the Hawaiian word for vibrato, a guttural tremor in the singing voice.  The opposite of ‘i’i’ is a steady tone.  Mela inoa-- Historical/genealogical songs, have very little ‘i’i.  The absence of ‘i’I made the words easier to understand.  In contrast, love songs contain a lot of ‘i’i’.  The more expressive or emotional a song is, the more ‘i’I’ is used. ‘i’i’
