1 HYDROLOGICAL SERVICES Tipping Bucket Rain Gauge Inspection & Maintenance

2 Despite robust construction and the ability to withstand harsh environments, tipping bucket rain gauges require routine inspection & maintenance in order to perform optimally. The following factors must be considered when developing a maintenance schedule:  The location of the installation  The environment around the rain gauge  The frequency of rainfall Rain gauge Maintenance

3  To ensure higher accuracy it is advisable to install the rain gauge in a location as close to the ground as possible and away from any high rise objects around the gauge.  It is recommended that a bird guard be installed in locations where birds will tend to fill the rain gauge funnel with sediment.  To ensure good results, a site visit is recommended every 2-3 months to service & check calibrate a rain gauge. 4  Allen key supplied with the rain gauge  Small crescent wrench (adjustable spanner)  Spray bottle with denatured alcohol (methylated spirit)  Lint free tissue or rag  Field Calibration Device (FCD) TB320  FCD instruction manual  Multimeter to check the reed switch  Small Philips head screwdriver  Water container  Recording pad (digital or manual) Rain gauge Maintenance Tools required for maintenance
