2. Despite robust construction and the ability to withstand harsh environments, tipping bucket rain gauges require routine inspection & maintenance in order to perform optimally. 3.  To ensure higher accuracy it is advisable to install the rain gauge in a location as close to the ground as possible and away from any high rise objects around the gauge.  It is recommended that a bird guard be installed in locations where birds will tend to fill the rain gauge funnel with sediment.  To ensure good results, a site visit is recommended every 2-3 months to service & check calibrate a rain gauge.
