6 This is the evaporation of water from plants. Water is lost from a plant in the process of transpiration.

7 Transpiration Water is lost from three main areas of a plant: Stomata – in the leaves, account for about 90% of water loss Cuticle – the waxy layer, some water is lost through diffusion Lenticles – woody stems have loosely packed cork cells through which gas exchange occurs – a little water is lost here

8 Transpiration Water moves through the plant from roots to leaves and is lost to the air as water vapour. This is known as the transpiration stream. About 98% of water entering a plant is lost to the air through transpiration Remaining 2% is used for photosynthesis
