2 CAMP GRADY SPRUCE INFORMATIONAL MEETING On May 24 or August 25 from 6:00pm – 6:30pm we will have an informational meeting that goes into more details about camp. At the meeting we will have a notary to notarize one of the camp forms needed. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. Chaperones will meet after the meeting from 6:30pm-6:45pm for a brief overview of the rules and plans.

4 What is Camp Grady Spruce? Camp Grady Spruce is a yearly trip made by Northwest ISD 5 th graders to an Outdoor Education Learning Center where children learn through hands-on experiences and are engaged and inquisitive about their surroundings. Students learn various concepts that encompass all of the major academic areas throughout both daytime and evening activities.

5 Camp Mission Our camp mission is to help students understand and experience the relationship between themselves and their environment, strengthen social relationships, and enhance their real- world experiences!

6 Camp Counselors

7 September 12-14, 2011 Depart approx. 8:00 AM, Mon., Sept. 12 Arrive back at Clara Love on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at approx. 3:00 PM Students must be dropped off and picked up by car. A Sack Lunch is required on Sept. 12 Camp Dates and Times

8 Chaperones  Chaperones manage the cabin. They also eat meals in the dining hall, participate in all activities and sleep in the cabins with the students.  Female chaperones will be cabins girls and male chaperones will be in cabins with boys.  Chaperones will be paired with their child during day time activities.  Chaperones must have an approved background check and attend a mandatory chaperone meeting before camp.  Chaperones must follow all district rules and guidelines.

9 Write to your camper! Letters by mail should be submitted no later than September 2 nd in order to arrive at camp by the necessary date. 10 More Camp Information  All meals are provided, except on September 12 where a sack lunch is needed. Send a completely disposable lunch with your child the day we leave.  Cabins have bunk beds. Each child has a separate place to sleep, bathe and use the restroom.  Teachers and chaperones participate in all activities.

11 Camp Activities These activities are just some of the fun things your children will experience: –Daytime activities Hike up Johnson’s Peak Explore Devil’s Island Canoeing / Lake Study Compass / Orienteering / Archery –Nighttime activities Star Lab / Night Hike Hayride / Campfire stories / S’mores

12 What to Bring to Camp 3T-shirts 2Long sleeve shirts, sweatshirts, or sweaters 3 Jeans, sweats, or long pants 2Shorts 6 Pairs of socks 6Undergarments 2 Pairs of shoes for walking and comfort (one pair that can get wet) 1Towel and washcloth Raincoat or Poncho Personal toiletries (i.e. soap, shampoo, deodorant, foot spray, etc.) Sleeping bag or one set of twin size sheets and blanket

13 What to Bring to Camp Pillow and pillowcase Flashlight with fresh batteries Insect repellant Lightweight raincoat or poncho Refillable water bottle (approx. 16 oz.) Paper and pencil Sunglasses (inexpensive pair) Sunscreen Cap/hat Day pack or light back pack Flip flops for shower use only Book for reading Disposable camera, if desired

14 What NOT to Bring to Camp Jewelry Radios/CD players/iPods Curling iron Hair dryer Electronic games (i.e. Game Boys, etc.) Food or snacks (all food and snacks will be provided) Knives or other sharp items Other expensive items (i.e. cameras, cell phones, beepers, etc.)

15 What does it cost? $170.00 /student for three days and two nights. This includes all room, board, meals, and activities $135.00 /chaperone We are always looking for positive role models to serve as chaperones for the students! See your homeroom teacher for further details!

16 Important Reminders Students must have all documents filled out and returned to Clara Love no later than August 26 th (YMCA Release form, Permission Slip, Activity Permission form, Student Conduct, etc). Medical release forms must be filled out as well notating all relevant medical information. All fees must be paid in advance of the trip - August 26 th.

17 Camp Forms Information and Medication Packets are provided by your child’s homeroom teacher. All forms are due by Friday, August 26 th. All medications need to be turned in to the nurse by Friday, September 2 nd. Teachers cannot accept medication.

18 Wednesday Morning Students are not allowed to ride the bus with all of their bags and bedding so they must be brought to school on Monday and you must pick them up on Wednesday. Please walk your child into the gymnasium and sign them in starting at 7:00. We will board the bus at 8:00 so please bring your child to school by 7:30. This way we are not interfering with the buses that morning. The students will make their name tags, meet their chaperones, and do a final checklist before they leave.

19 Wednesday Afternoon Students are not allowed to ride the bus with all of their bags and bedding so they must be picked up on Wednesday. Don’t forget to pick up your child’s medicines from the nurse.

20 Attendance Guidelines Attendance guidelines are the same for camp as they are for school. If your child has a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, etc. they will have to be picked up by a parent from camp. Student Safety and Health are the #1 priority.

21 Medications Students are not allowed to transport prescription medicines so you must bring them to the nurse prior to the day of departure. A medication form must be filled out and signed by you for each medication – Mrs. Todar will take these forms when you give her the medicine. When you pick up your student up on Wednesday, you must collect the medication from the nurse. It will not be given to the student to take home.

22 Prescription Medication Medication must be in the original container. Must have the pharmacy label intact with: CHILD’S NAME, NAME OF MEDICATION, DOSAGE, AND PHYSICIANS NAME. Only send enough medication for 3 days. On the day we leave give your child their AM dose. Only noon and evening doses will be given that day. A nurse will be available throughout the whole time at camp.
