1 Antibacterial activity of antiseptics and disinfectants
Banea Ioana

2 Introduction within hospitals, a proper decontamination of surfaces and hands of the staff is mandatory, considering the need of nosocomial infections prevention Disinfectants – strong bactericidal activity Used on surfaces Antiseptics – low bactericidal/bacteriostatic activity Used on hands, lesions

3 Purpose The comparison of antibacterial activity of various antiseptics and disinfectants that are commonly used in hospitals

4 Materials and methods we analysed the activity of
four type of antiseptics Clorhexin Pliwa derm Iodine Alcohol four disinfectants Triton rapid Pliwa big extra Roditzin Pliwa lemon fresh On seven different bacterial species

5 Serial binary dilutions
Materials and methods Serial binary dilutions (100 μl) Decontaminants (200 μl) standard CLSI microdilution method. In microtiter plates, binary dilutions were made of each decontaminant to a final volume of 100 μl. 0.5 McFarland bacterial suspensions 10 μl were inoculated in μl Muller-Hinton broth. 100 μl were inoculated into each of the plate wells. incubated at 35°C for 24 hours. 100 μl 0.5 McFarland 9990 μl M-H 10 μl

6 Materials and methods For each bacterial species and for each decontaminant, the last dilution were no growth was found was noted. MIC

7 Materials and methods From the last three dilutions without growth > spot inoculation MBC

8 Results MIC dilution factors
S. aureus E. faecalis E. coli P. aeruginosa Shigella Salmonella Clostridium Clorhexin 32 4 16 2 Pliwa derm 8 64 Iodine 128 256 Alcohol Triton rapid 4096 Pliwa big extra 512 Roditzin Pliwa lemon fresh Antiseptics Disinfectants The highest the dilution factor … The strongest the decontaminant More sensitive bacteria

9 Results Potency rank of the decontaminants
Name Type Component 1 Component 2 Componenet 3 1 Pliwa big extra disinfectant amine Quaternary ammonium salt polyether 2 Triton rapid polieter 3 Pliwa lemon fresh alcohol 4 Iod antiseptic iodine 5 Roditzin alcohol, phosphates enzymes, surfactants 6 Pliwa derm 7 Clorhexin clorhexidin digluconate 8 Alcool Potency

10 ResultS Efficiency of decontaminants
Alcohol - based Amine & Quaternary ammonium - based

11 Results High Bacterial resistance
To disinfectants Pseudomonas aeruginosa Escherichia coli To antiseptics Shigella Salmonella Gram-negative bacteria

12 Conclusions The disinfectants have strong antibacterial activity
there are some bacterial species which resist better than other, especially if these substances are diluted too much. The non-alcohol based decontaminants are the most potent For the decontamination of skin, other antiseptics than alcohol are recommended. The most resistant bacteria are the Gram-negative

13 Thank you for attention
