ANZAC Day dawn service ANZAC Day commemorations begin with the dawn service. Traditions that are usually included in the dawn service are: singing a hymn (a special kind of religious song) saying a prayer laying wreaths reciting ‘The Ode’ listening to a rendition of ‘The Last Post’ one minute of silence to remember and think about the experiences and sacrifices of soldiers who have fought in wars. During wartime, ‘The Last Post’ was played to let soldiers know that the day’s activities had come to an end. On ANZAC Day it is played to show that those Australians who have died in conflicts have gone to their final rest.

ANZAC Day dawn service The eternal flame is an important symbol of the ANZAC Day dawn service. The eternal flame burns continuously to show that those who have lost their lives will never be forgotten. The phrase ‘Lest we forget’ is also spoken at the dawn service as a reminder to never forget.
