2. RED POPPY A Red Poppy. A symbol of ANZAC Day. Poppies were the first flowers that grew in Flanders Fields during World War 1. Poppies can often be seen at major commemorative events,military funerals,war graves and war cemeteries. There is a day to support the RSA and it is called Poppy Day. This day has been part of the New Zealand calendar since 1922. Making this day one of the oldest nationwide appeals volunteers sell poppies for a donation to the RSA. 2

3. “Lest we forget” Methven War Memorial. “Lest we forget” is a saying most countries say in remembrance of those who fought and died for us in war. “Lest we forget” is often said at Anzac parades, speeches, poems and songs to do with the war. It is also found on War memorials. The saying means we will never forget those men and women who fought and died for their country. 3

4. WHY THE 25th OF APRIL? Gallipoli Peninsula, where on the 25th of April the ANZAC’S landed. The ANZACs landed at the Gallipoli peninsula on the 25th of April. The 25th of April is a National day of remembrance to commemorate all New Zealanders and Australians who served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. It also commemorates the contribution and suffering of all those who served. It was originally to honour the members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps who fought in Gallipoli. It is observed in the Cook Islands,Niue,Pitcairn Islands and Tonga. ANZAC Day is observed in Canada although it is not a holiday. ANZAC Day was previously a national holiday in Papua New Guinea and Samoa. 4

5. ANZAC BISCUITS HISTORY ANZAC Biscuits. ANZAC biscuits are a tradition that both New Zealand and Australia share, although each country says they invented them. The original ANZAC biscuit was a hard, crunchy and flat biscuit, suitable for dunking in tea. The most common recipe of the original ANZAC biscuits involves of rolled oats, coconut, butter and golden syrup as the binding agent. After the battle of Gallipoli, when New Zealand and Australian troops were known worldwide as the ANZAC’s and the name became protected by law, it was suitable that the popular rolled oat biscuit had the name of ANZAC. The first mention of an ANZAC biscuit in a cookbook was in 1921. 5
